I've combined the abyss theme with the frog theme. (The font I used is a free downloadable by font by, Nate Piekos.) Also, I hope that this new Pending guy is a good judge. (The pun I used is a bad one by, Reton8.)
Thy skys tremble to tears at his mere presence. His amphibian kin bow to his all mighty will. His enemies cower in fear from his regal justice...
He is Politoed, King of Frogs
His royal subjects:
Poliwrath, the Throne guard
Toxicroak, the Huntsman
Seismitoad, the Knight
Froakie, the Royal Adviser
(All of the characters belong to Nintendo and the Pokemon company, and bah... The scan quality is crap...)
First Place
This was a difficult decision for me, and it is a decision derived mostly out of how I thought the theme should have been judged. I decided that I'd go off of what I thought was the coolest design for a frog was, and indeed Hectic won the cake.
Though I'd like to see it get a little less rough around the edges, the frog presented kept an original feel while appearing and seeming frog-like enough to be a frog. To be a snobby nitpicker, I'd tell you that the foremost eye is askew and dilapidated, and could be done better. Also, the horns don't particularly blend well into the creature. The colors do, but the lack of lines to show how the two parts of the beast connect end up making a good portion of it look flat. However, I like the perspective used.
Runner Up
After seeing my utter failure at making a compelling enough theme the first time around, I was pleased to find out that there would be at least one person to enter if I hadn't wisely changed the theme of the contest.
I liked the glare effect coming from its eyes. Truly, I think this frog is a god of amphibians who resides in the deepest part of the pond. He is large and he is harsh but he is fair. If only he wasn't such a recognizeable rainforest frog, he probably would have won- but I'm a stickler for monster creation, hence Hectic beat you.

I really liked the style used for this. The lines are deliciously thick and there's a lot of action happening here. However due to my uannounced criteria I didn't give it a winning spot. Don't take it personally, it's still cute as can be. Even if it's the Dark Side of the frog, it doesn't make it any less adorable.
Just lookit those big 'ol eyes. Who can say no to those?

When I was a kid I would always look at politoad and see if it was a hypnosis type thing. It never worked, but I continued to try anyway. That bit of myself out of the way, I think that the portrayal of the beloved frog pokemans is pretty accurate to how things would work in the animal kingdom. Each is well represented and you can tell what they are. Good one.

I almost gave this one first place, but it was missing one element: action. The frog looks quite nice and original, and the concept is tidy. The only thing that the character needed in order to have won would have been casting some kind of spell, or maybe more detail on the book/staff to give more of a clue to the past behind it. If it wasn't for having wholly separate criteria for runner's up (I had a variety of choices, so I didn't exactly know how I'd be able to base runner's up on the same type of criteria), this would have definetly won it.
New Theme!
Heartbreak. It breaks hearts. I've been through heartbreak, a lot of my friends have been through heartbreak. It's something that hollows out a person and makes them always cry out to be whole again.
But that theme is depressing, so instead we're going to do Lost Kingdoms!
From the Mayans to the Incas to the mythical Atlanteans, there's a certain call to the Lost Kingdoms of Yore that invade the audience's mind. I would like to see out of this theme crumbling temples, fallen buildings and forgotten cities that nature tore apart while mankind forgot. Or, perhaps it'll be our very own cities completely forgotten and last to the annals of history? Already there are Lost Kingdoms and cities beneath our feet, recorded in the footnotes of college history papers.
As was with before, if I have less than 4 entries I'll just do a new theme, or I'll pump it back a half a week or so.
