So what is going on? Well a few of my friends like skeleton_pilot and kegaumongo already know about this situation. So since the time when Latvias president changed to the worst president possible, russians now started living in Latvia not respecting our language and talking russian in the middle of the streets. One day i was going to a random candy store from school and entered one and just took a random candy and told him that i wanted to buy the candy. The seller was russian and didnt understand what i say. He asked "What?" in the russian language, the candy store didnt say anything about the store being russian. There were lots of other times when i needed to talk russian in my own country. Then schools started learning children how to talk russian. Just to understand russian guys in Latvia. That cannot be accepted because the russians are in our country and they have to speak latvian, but they are like: "oh who cares! We russians have a bigger country, why should we learn Latvian. Latvians should learn our language." And like that we Latvians are living. Then people on Latvia started to fear that if they will fight back, the russians just might take up an unfriendly visit with all their guns, soldiers and tanks. And i mean. Thats wrong. The russians cannot be like this to us latvians. They might kill us all, right here, right now. Including me and my family. Why are russians so mean?

There's nothing wrong with speaking your native language in public. It's only dastardly and disrespectful when you use your native language to hide disrespectful things to say about someone else. Otherwise, speaking your 1st tongue should be perfectly fine and shouldn't be so touchy as an issue.

One day i was going to a random candy store from school and entered one and just took a random candy and told him that i wanted to buy the candy. The seller was russian and didnt understand what i say. He asked "What?" in the russian language, the candy store didnt say anything about the store being russian.

Every time I read this OP, I'm starting to think you're exaggerating this "issue" of someone speaking a different language. I do see the problem when the proprietor cannot speak the official language of his/her country, though. Equality issues aside, how will he make more business if he can't issue many contracts in the very place he runs?

There were lots of other times when i needed to talk russian in my own country.

If Latvia has an official accepted language to speak, then I can see the sudden emergence in this. If your state is undefined, then don't fret about it and embrace equality within your country. Avoid places that cannot speak your language from now on.

Then schools started learning children how to talk russian.

Fantastic! I wish I was taught a second language when I was a kid. Even if it wasn't Swedish. Extroverted jobs look highly upon being able to speak more than one language. In fact, you're more likely to hold your job if you're able.

but they are like: "oh who cares! We russians have a bigger country, why should we learn Latvian. Latvians should learn our language."

Perhaps you should provide a link to how the other side of this issue perceives language in Latvia, otherwise, I look at this and think you're putting words into the Russian citizens' mouths.

You got all this just from a simple foreign language gaffe!?

Given that a quarter of the population is Russian and that it has been Russian for two centuries before breaking off, what would one expect? I have the same problem here; them Chinese workers don't use English. That doesn't give us an impetus to push them into learning our language. That smacks of pseudo nationalism and is not a logical corollary. It's not like they deliberately want to be "mean"; they just dont know a second language much of the time.

Yes, because I have to learn Spanish in 'Murrica! America, **** yeah!

Suck it up. Russian is a bad-*** language. It's always good to be multilingual anyways. A good percentage of the people where I live either don't speak English or barely speak it, so we have to learn the language (Spanish, usually) for utilitarian purposes.

Latvia did used to be part of Russia, so it probably isn't that surprising a lot of the population speaks Russian, but unless there's an official language you can't really complain.

p.s. If Russia invaded NATO would probably destroy them (if we got involved that is)

p.p.s. Why would you want to learn Russian, German is a much more awesome language.

Latvian is the official language, but that doesn't mean anything.

Cause Russians make an important minority, and because it's more practical to learn Russian than German there?

It used to be part of the USSR..as one of the minion countries, and before that it used to be in union with Poland..or was that actually union with some Crown land that took the name Poland as a whole?
Either way, somehow the polish minority, although large as well, isn't that privileged, our peeps are even getting abused by latvians for trying to learn polish as a secondary language in their own specialised schools and for having polish surnames isntead of translating them more latvianlike.
And yet WE - the Polish are pictured as tyrants and oppressors. Nothing wrong with Russians.

See an answer yet?

p.s. If Russia invaded NATO would probably destroy them (if we got involved that is)
Nope, it would result in another world war and NATO + Russia destroying most of the civilised world. Russia is rather unlikely to attack, you don't need to be afraid of that too much..at least yet.

p.p.s. Why would you want to learn Russian, German is a much more awesome language.

Hell yeah! What other language makes the name of a creature renowned for beauty and grace sound like you want to murder something (english - butterfly, polish - motyl, french - papillon, german? nah - SCHMETTERLING!!!)

No. Now we all Latvians need to learn russian to understand russians in our own country since of their laziness. I would love to learn German and visit the Berlin, but russian has taken place because russians do not respect the Latvian language.

you don't need to be afraid of that too much..at least yet.

Agian:

at least yet.

Well thank you, this makes me feel alot better now. Thank you very much.

The Russians, just like any other of us Slavic morons, are VERY patriotic. You were part of the Russians for 2 centuries if I'm not mistaken. So, the Russians consider you Russia. Same like how the Serbians and Croats and Slovaks consider Russia belonging to the kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovaks.

Most of the old Ruskies will be reluctant to take the time to learn Latvian, because, well, they're Ruskies. They just (relatively) recently have gotten permission to actually exit their own country, most of them still don't know how stuff works in other countries.

And don't worry about Russians attacking you. Russians are very peacful, except when it comes to the US.
