Did you read the startpost? If not:
A merit is a reward by a moderator. It is usually given for outstanding game comments or in certain contests like the Poetry contest or the Haiku contest found in the Art, Music and Writing section of this site.
....
Remember, however, that merits are a reward, not a right.
Or to quote another mod:
"You do not write a merit. You write a review of the game, and maybe it will get rewarded with a merit."
Make good and constructive posts.... dont spam... if youre lucky youll get one.
Besides that you can search for "merite-guides" in the forums, beyond that look at the newcomers forum... Keyword SIPPYCUpS.

I'm a relatively new user and my browser has had trouble supporting quite a few games. What browser usually has the least trouble, or is it specific to each one?

They no longer allow merits in the haiku contest. At least to Killersup's knowledge.

I'm a relatively new user and my browser has had trouble supporting quite a few games. What browser usually has the least trouble, or is it specific to each one?
I know Chrome has been having many issues of late..out of the main 3 Firefox is best. Though, if I remember correctly, killersup seems quite knowledgeable on this subject..so leave him a message on his profile and ask him

can you please explain this so called search for the number? i tried pressing the F3 button and searching, did not work, ttried just typing it in randomly and hitting enter, did not work, i also tried typing it into google, (ya, i was that desperate), am i doing something wrong? can anyone help?
