That's freestyle. You need the following to be good at it:

a) A good sense of rhythm- otherwise you get lost.
b) Your own established style of lyrical flow- otherwise it sounds whack.
c) Either an extraordinary knack for rhyming (e.g. Eminem), making up crazy words (e.g. Snoop-Dogg), or preset rhymes that you can plug in however you want.

If all else fails, plagiarise and hope you don't get caught :P

I don't practice freestyle much- it's much more hardcore and I don't consider myself a real rapper. But I can write down verses quickly.

Yes, you seem pretty good Strop, you could probably do freestyle if you practiced it, but I think you are pretty good as you do it now, I think it would be funny to actually see you recite the verses though!

You know how I started my rapping 'career'?

Back in school, I was a bit of a nerd. Well, not the kind of nerd that plays D&D tabletop- I was quite active, a well known musician, but had high grades and tended to mix with all the other 'nerds'. So people didn't think I was that 'cool'. I was, however, a bit of a household name.

One day, a representative of the then new School Council came on stage during a school assembly and announced "Next Wednesday, we'll be holding the school's first Battle of the Bands! It'll feature Strop doing a freestyle rap."

I was like WTF!? I had received no prior consultation on this, and suddenly everybody is like "so you're gonna rap, eh?" Well, s***.

So I prepared some lines and eventually the fateful day came. Man, was I scared. I mean I'm this Asian nerd with glasses and stuff, and suddenly you're asking me to do a rap? And everybody's cleared off the grounds coz they're watching this event? I was used to playing a piano, not busting rhymes!

Well, the guys started up the beat so I thought I'd better not choke. I won't give you what I said because it's full of school in-jokes, so you won't understand them >: but it went off surprisingly good- for a rap based almost entirely on how I wasn't a rapper and if I tried to be one I'd probably get put on detention. I wasn't great with the flow so it was a bit on the old-skool side, but the worst that happened was that I got tangled in the microphone cable! Haha. I even was daring enough to beatbox for a bit...I'm not great but I can do a bit.

Needless to say that after that my 'cool' factor rose considerably. It wasn't like I deliberately tried to make myself cooler, seeing as I was rumored into it and all!

After that I figured well, I actually like this thing called rap, so I stuck with it, among other things.

Yeah, haha, one day I might put some stuff together and release an album or something, and then promo it myself like all them gangstas in Kanye West gear strutting the promenade of Santa Monica Beach...

"Yo, check this out, I'm on my way to the TOP OF THE GAME bro, tell you what, I can hook ya up, just ten bucks for a CD, here's my card ADD ME ON MYSPACE MAN!!!"

Fo' real.

Then straight after that, I'll release a rock album and watch people's brains implode.

Reminds me of a captioned Bugs Bunny sticker I saw a long time ago somewhere in the UK Metro tube:

"EASY LISTENING DOES MY HEAD IN"

In all seriousness, I am working on both rock music and rap tracks simultaeneously. Go ahead, don't believe me, I dare you.

I can just see the reviews coming out now:

"In his vainglorious attempts to demonstrate his musical versatility, Strop has managed to paint himself masterfully as a jack of all trades...and a master of none. His vapid, commercialised mishmash of rock (if it could be called that) sounds derivative although it is unclear as to where his influences hail from, with the exception of the achy-breaky power-ballad, the biggest sell-out of all that he would have done well to keep well hidden away in the confines of his studio, like many an emo poem stashed away in an angsty teenager's diary. Some vague flashes of inspiration can be found among the quieter moments but don't quite come to fruition before being swallowed up by a vast chaotic chasm of power chords, tired riffs and overdone reverb.

As if this were not bad enough, it came hot on the heels of his debut as a self-styled 'rapper without the bling'. While the push to separate the aesthetic from its cultural ghetto roots- or rather the white suburbia which appropriated it- is, admittedly, somewhat novel, it remains to be asked exactly to what ends Strop was writing; evne for a debut he lacks a sense of direction- which this author is going to suggest is symptomatic of operating to a cultural pretension. Furthermore, all he has managed to prove is not that rap can exist aside from bling, drivebys and b****es, but rather that anybody apart from the Blacks, with the arguable odd exception, should be kept well away from the mic.

In other news, Strop has released yet another record- this time classical piano. In the biography, it is noted that he has 'had extensive training as a concert pianist', which, strangely enough, might yet bring a glimmer of hope to this reviewer's weary ears. Apart from rock, rap, and marketing strategy, is there anything this man can't do?"

this part doesn't exactly rhyme "and when I play I even use my mind"
And the part about you liking to shake your long blond hair is a weird action for a male... especially a 20 year old male... your mature... Aren't you?

but other than those things, I do like you "rap" as you call it.
