There are tons of ways to find friends.
Playing one of the 11 MMO (Last stand dead zone recommended). In an mmo you can make a clan, talk to people and just generally have fun. If these people are on AG you can just add them and comment on their profiles.
Exitpath, Colony, The last castle and shell shock live are also great multiplayer games where you can interact with players and talk to them.
And if you really want to go over the top. You can make a thread in the newcomers section describing yourself and generally being nice.
There's a lot of ways to get friends on AG, but you just have to look a little harder. Comment on some peoples profiles. Tell them you're new and you're wondering about the site. Trust me, active people (usually) are willing to help out new people and have a conversation.
Oh yeah, and you can go to the popular media section and find people with similar music taste or the flash games section and talk about some games.

Actually you're post was probably more useless than his thread. He was just asking how to meet people and he might not know how to make friends as easily you do. You'd be surprised.
Oh and yes that big add friend button works too.
