Both are very popular and well known, but which do you think is the best? Personally, I love Rock and Roll, some Dubstep is okay, but to me Rock has more feeling and purpose in it's songs/lyrics. Dubstep is Transformer music trying to summon the Decepticons on us and destroy the world! But what do you guys think?

I love Rock, it's like a type of religion to me and the fact that it's been around a lot more. I don't mind Dubstep but between these two genders of music I would choose Rock.

Post-hardcore is a punk sub genre.

Actually, post-hardcore is more of a sub genre to metal core than it would be punk. But my point still stands, some people would think of post-hardcore as a rock-subgenre. Apparently some think of it as a punk sub-genre, but that fight is useless and could go for a long time.

No. Good old fashioned Rock and roll is a fusion of jazz, blues, country and rock, popular nearly half a century ago. Three Days sounds nothing like that. Basically your entire post is unrelated to rock and roll. It's just rock.

I was generalizing his post of rock and roll to just straight rock to simplify and attempt to make the question more easily answerable.

No, post-hardcore came from hardcore punk, which came from, no prizes, punk.

Well, then OP should seriously consider petitioning a mod to change his thread to rock, since his question is getting answered wrongly.

Alt rock usually includes synthesizers that make it a mixture of rock and techno with a bit of a lean towards rock. HARD ROCK is just where the musicians pick up chords like diminished fourhts and creepy, upbeat music like so. For example some songs by Avenged Sevenfold. Soft rock, is an almost pop like version of rock. Not too hard to understand. But then what we came to talk about, our specific rock.

What? No
Alternative rock - a very wide umbrella term..wiki puts it best
The name "alternative rock" essentially serves as an umbrella term for underground music that has emerged in the wake of punk rock since the mid-1980s.[16] Throughout much of its history, alternative rock has been largely defined by its rejection of the commercialism of mainstream culture, although this could be contested ever since some of the major alternative artists have achieved mainstream success or co-opted with the major labels from the 1990s onwards (especially since the new millennium and beyond). Alternative bands during the 1980s generally played in small clubs, recorded for indie labels, and spread their popularity through word of mouth.[17] As such, there is no set musical style for alternative rock as a whole, although The New York Times in 1989 asserted that the genre is "guitar music first of all, with guitars that blast out power chords, pick out chiming riffs, buzz with fuzztone and squeal in feedback."[18] Sounds range from the gloomy soundscapes of gothic rock to the jangling guitars of indie pop to the dirty guitars of grunge to the '60s/'70s revivalism of Britpop. More often than in other rock-styles since the mainstreaming of rock music during the 1970s, alternative rock lyrics tend to address topics of social concern, such as drug use, depression, and environmentalism.[17] This approach to lyrics developed as a reflection of the social and economic strains in the United States and United Kingdom of the 1980s and early 1990s.

Hard rock - Hard rock is a form of loud, aggressive rock music. The electric guitar is often emphasised, used with distortion and other effects, both as a rhythm instrument using repetitive riffs with a varying degree of complexity, and as a solo lead instrument.[2] Drumming characteristically focuses on driving rhythms, strong bass drum and a backbeat on snare, sometimes using cymbals for emphasis.[3] The bass guitar works in conjunction with the drums, occasionally playing riffs, but usually providing a backing for the rhythm and lead guitars.[4] Vocals are often growling, raspy, or involve screaming or wailing, sometimes in a high range, or even falsetto voice.[5] Hard rock has sometimes been labelled **** rock for its emphasis on overt masculinity and sexuality and because it has historically been predominately performed and consumed by men: in the case of its audience, particularly white, working-class adolescents.[3]

Soft rock - Imagine a band that uses the same techniques as rock music..but toned down and softer. Not &quotop"-esque

Oh..and Avenged Sevenfold are not just hard rock..most of their songs are more on the metal side (spare for their earlier stuff..which was metalcore)

Anyways, now that i've settled that matter,

ha

Oh and to the part about rock and roll vs rock
Rock is merely a derivative form of rock and roll..or an "evolved version"..if you will
Now..i'm not saying first there was rock and roll..and then people created rock from it..I'm saying first there was rock and roll..then it became rock

I like how your only sources for information is wikipedia, because they are all so reliable right? Anyways, your long message about the different genres is just a much much longer version of what i said, our descriptions both come from the same meaning, mine is just very summarized, for example read your version of the hard rock definition, then read mine. Diminished fourths are an easy way to create the same feeling distortion gives a listener without actually needing distortion, and my example of Avenged Sevenfold perfectly fits your definition, yes some stuff may be metal core or metal, but songs like nightmare definetly fit under hard rock, maybe a bit punk-ish. And other songs like beast and the harlot, some may call almost metal, but i would still clasify that as hardrock.

As for the simplfied "Rock and roll" term i gave by just generalizing to rock, my only intent was to make the question easier to answer, i interpreted the question by my definition of rock, as others may think of rock and roll like AC/DC or some may even describe elvis. Everyone has there own meaning for rock and roll, rock was mine.

As for my poorely described version of post-hardcore, i apologize for that, after looking it up on sites other than just wikipedia i realized you guys were right, sorry for being stuck up on that.

But ya, in summary, i was just simplifying terms for my own purpose of answering the question, sorry if its not the definition you guys may have, but rock is different for everyone, i even tested this theory by looking up the defintion, every site has it different.

You're comparing two completely different genres. It would make sense if you said "Which is better: Dubstep or Trap", or "Which is better: Rock and Roll or Heavy Metal". Dubstep and Rock and Roll have no similarities and is like asking "Which is better: Blue or the kitchen". It just doesn't make sense.

Actually, yes...it very well can be.

Anyways, your long message about the different genres is just a much much longer version of what i said

No..no it isn't. You called Alternative rock rock with techno..and said soft rock had pop in it

as others may think of rock and roll like AC/DC or some may even describe elvis

Note: (not directed to you specifically kirks) Elvis is rock and roll..if you want to be specific in terminology and not take into account the fact that rock and roll evolved into rock

Which is better: Dubstep or Trap", or "Which is better: Rock and Roll or Heavy Metal"

Actually..for music..comparisons should go as such:
-Overlaying main genre vs Overlaying main genre (i.s, Rock vs Techno)
-Subgenre of a main genre vs subgenre of same main genre (i.e. Heavy metal vs Death metal)

Comparisons should not be:
-Overlaying main genre vs subgenre of a main genre (i.e. Rock/rock and roll vs dubstep)
-Subgenre of a main genre vs subgenre of a different genre (i.e. Dubstep vs Trap)

Which is better: Blue or the
kitchen

Not really..if you want to make a stretch of a comparison like that..a better one (keeping kitchen) would be "Which is better, An apartment or the kitchen of a 2 story house"

You guys worry too much about genres and whether or not the subjects are related enough to be compared. Just take it as it is.

I'll take Rock 'N Roll everyday. The dubstep lovers are a bunch of obnoxious hipsters and, uh, what's the right phrase for it... "fake materialistic kids."

"Which is better: Blue or the kitchen".

You gotta be fair, both dubstep and rock'n'roll is music (the latter more than the first, but that's just me :P). Your analogy is ridiculous.

Most people that "like" Dubstep today, say that and only know a few songs and say they are big fans. I myself like a few songs, but nothing beats Rock and Roll.

I think Rock 'n Roll has more complexity and feeling, in the lyrics and in the rythm.
I'm not very tolerant with the genres I don't like, so, to me my TV's static effect sounds just like dubstep.
