I think this idea would work well, and yeah, I agree with mrtim, the help page should be put right on that board so people could see it immediately!

This is a great idea, but I'm not sure if people would enjoy being called a "Newbie". How about "New Player Center"?

Newbie is the scientific word for 'being new', and we have to stick to reality, and I think New Player sounds rather weird...
