Just the same as any other sport. Gymnastics is creative and you can do whatever you like, but the Olympic committee created a set of scoring rules, and it works. They would have to do the same fro Parkour. They could be times, to see who gets through the course the fastest. Then get additional points for difficulty of execution of moves, and for the types of things they did. And Points deducted for falls or mistakes made. A set of rules for scoring would be developed as for any other scored olympic sport like: diving, gymnastics, freestyle snowboarding, and others.

Good point woody, I think that if it was in the olympics, it would be under like a Parkour speed course. I think that follows the idea of the sport well, the ability to move the human body through the environment at high speeds. If you've ever seen the show Ninja Warrior, it would have to be something like that. A timed obstacle course. And maybe you are right, maybe it shouldn't be in the Olympics because that could take a the sport in a different direction than what it's intended to be, however I do think that it would be nice to have more professional coverage of the sport instead of lots of low quality youTube videos.

As an avid traceur(one who does parkour), I would be against the idea of putting parkour in the olympics. This is because parkour is not only an activity, but has a philosophy behind it as well. This is promoting quick-thinking and awareness in everyday situations. This philosophy, as intended by the creator, is a strict non-competitive activity and therefore should not be added to the olympics. Free running, on the other hand, could be an olympic event, because to the best of my knowledge, does not have quite the philosophical background of parkour. The difference between the two can pretty much be summed up as free running contains flips and focuses on movements while parkour is all about using the most efficient route possible from point A to point B.

bbyers9113,  Judo has a philosophy that goes along with it and it's in the olympics.  However, I think you make a good point and I'm all for freerunning if not parkour.

The difference is Flipski between parkour and free running is that how many proffessional parkour/free running judges do you think there are. It would definitly hav tons of teething problems.

Woody nailed it.

As somebody who does both free-running and Parkour (if you want to say there's a difference...some certainly will insist), I'd say that the inclusion of Parkour in the games would certainly be a controversial inclusion. Particularly if it were to be judged on technique and form, as this would detract from something also central to the movement: personalisation.

I was actually thinking about this earlier today so I'm stoked to see the thread, and just earlier in the week saying that good traceurs could probably give the pros a run for their money in the steeplechase. But something more free-running, I thought that would look absolutely sweet although on further consideration, I don't think the community would be ready for that for a long time yet.

It might in the future seeing as the community will grow and change and so too will the dynamics. The original insistence on spontanaeity and independence may be lost in the subsequent commercialisation and organisation of the forms. As somebody who did these things before he was even aware of Foucan and Belle's coinage, I'd say that they already took that double-edged step by naming techniques, forever embalming free expression in the bounds of formality (something akin to what Sartre did to existentialism).

The other concern is that parkour and free running is demonstrably more dangerous than most of the other sports, frequently resulting in severe injury and sometimes death. If an additional competitive pressure were taken, you can be sure that a lot of people are going to die, and the IOC certainly can't have that.

Yeah, that is a great idea. We should add Parkour to the Olympics! Then we can have a cartwheel contest. We can have a bake off with our EZ Bake Ovens and ExtremeHop scotch. You guys better stay tuned so you don't miss the finals for the Play Doh build off. Phew, the Olympics are heating up!
