Yes. I am currently trying the 30 day trial of Flash 8 because of a book I am reading, however, it seems like most people prefer CS3.
What are the major differences between the two?

I guess the major difference is Actionscript 3.0 suport
My Flash CS3 just got here, I'll have more info on it later, have been using Flash 8 until now

For my videos I will proably use SwishMax 2. It is designed for making videos, and is only $150.

Not to me, because I only have to pay $75 of it.
Can I draw a character in it, then animate it? Or do I have to use preset stuff that they already have in there?

you can be as creative as you want....the sky is the limit...yes you can draw whatever you want...its pretty much exactly like flash in essence.
