Referrals used to be given when someone clicked on a certain link. You would pute a link to AG on your myspace or something and if someone clicked it and joined AG then whoever posted the link got AP.
This has been removed though. People abused the referall system by making false acounts so their main acounts could get a bunch of free AP.
