Sorry for double post but here is a comic that explains it in a funny way.

Old typewriters had the metels keys that printed onto the paper. When you started typing faster, letters that were close together would start jamming up against each other.
Thus they moved the most common letters furthur apart. When the keyboard was invented, they stuck with the same layout because thats what people were used to.
