I love graffiti and have done my whole life, so here's a thread about it.
Tagging is the calligraphic writing of one's name or alias. It is generally regarded as the earliest form of graffiti. No outline involved in the leter forms. Generally the fewer the syllables the better. Taggers write their own name/crew name. Some go for clarity, others let the can drip on purpose='drippers'.
Throw-ups consist of single letter outlines, executed at speed, sometimes just a single stroke and filled in with a solitary colour. There are tons of styles out there, most frequent is the 'bubble style' ie round forms.Block lettering from a can or with rollers or 'block busters' are in this category. Images eg faces/figures can be throw ups too.
Pieces are, in a nutshell, more detailed versions of throw ups. Very personal to the writers usually using modified letterforms of some kind. Can be done in 'wildstyle' - staright lettering, as in 70s NYC writers, but are seldom used nowadays.
Productions are pieces or a series of pieces tied together with a common background background. Often written by crews.
Here's an example of all of the above.
(Footnote: Pieces and Productions are generally coloured in((but not always)), but due to laziness issues they remain in black and white.)
@ Strop, well it could work, it'd probably look more legit than a sketch. I never use programs, mainly cos I don't know how, but feel free to try and post the results.
Honestly I wouldn't mind seeing that kind of stuff on the tubes. Regardless of the fact that tags are a valuable part of the graffiti contribution, the aesthetic appeal of pieces is still greater.
Hehe, I've got tons more yeahs. It was my thing when I was in my tube phase. Incidently the only camera I have been able to find (without going into the attic which I ain't gonna do) has been the one with all my tube pieces, so its good that you like them cos I have plenty more where they come from.
Hehe I understand. Street art/graffiti/bombing/writing are all acceptable terms.
Yeah I have done quite a bit. I started when I was 11, as my older brother used to take me bombing, you could say he mentored me.
I would say, I stopped being 'active' when I was about 16.5 yrs, although I occassionally will bomb if I have the chance, although only on legal walls. When you are young you don't care about getting caught, as you've nothing to risk. So yeah, legal walls now, but for about 5 and a bit years, anywhere I could walk/climb/get a bus/train to.
