In my opinion the best race are trolls, with their speed bonus. You just have to buy another speed bonus and produce spearmens. They can reach opposite site, even before our foe send first units! They are weak on fight, i agree, but they don't have to be good warriors, 'couse they are great runners ;)

Even though the trolls do have that awesome speed bonus (and the awesomeness of the giant), the undead have a +3 halberd bonus. Even though they are slow, as they encounter enemies, they stack up on one another. So instead of attacking 3, for example, they attack 3 times the number of halberds. Spearman can only attack 1; 25 spearmen can only do 25 damage, where 25 halberds do 75 damage (these numbers are made up).

But nonetheless, you're right; they are good runners, but when the difficulty gets harder, the spearman can't keep up.

I am having a difficult time killing the undead's flailer as the motW. Does anyone know their weakness?
