There is a bit of adjustment there. Far as I can tell letting go of the concept of an afterlife is often one of the last things that's done. Though doing so can often lead to enjoying the life you have more. It's appreciated something good more because it's finite and won't last.
It's like say you went to an amusement park and you're told you can stay the rest of your life, but later you find out you can only stay for the day. Sure it's natural you might be disappointed at first. But wouldn't you then try to get as much out of that day, more so than you would when you thought you had a lifetime?

Yes, though usually you will also find the concept of omnipresence mixed in there which would make the separation bit make no sense. Not sure if that was in your former beliefs or not. I did find the concept of God not being perfect to be interesting on your part. Though your near to perfect argument could have been countered.
