My theory is basically that the earth contains evidence of a past that never existed. That is, an earth that is billions of years old, and remains that hint at an evolutionary DNA pattern. In short, this would be how we formed had this been the beginning.
God, however, started the beginning beyond this point, making that sort of an unwritten prologue. In this way, the events of the earth start there, but those who don't have the omnipresent viewpoint will find traces of this "prologue".
In a way, it's mostly a way for fulfilling the laws of nature in that they could have created the earth. It's also just God's way of starting with the creature made in his image.
