I actually came from a C++ background so when I wanted to make flash games, I naturally chose AS3. It was easier to transition to, than AS2.
If you don't feel comfortable with AS3 even after you learn it, don't feel forced to stick with it. The transition can be hard for some, especially if you're used to AS2. You should never code in a language that you're not comfortable with. Good luck.
