Persuasive speech outline Introduction I. Capture: A. 400,000 people die every year from a preventable disease. This represents 16% of Americas deaths annually It can be stopped but yet 25% of America don’t do anything about it. What is the easiest way to prevent this disease? The answer is to be active! II. Motivate: A. By listening to this speech, you might save yourself from thousands of dollars, disease, and even prevent an early death III. Assert: Today you will learn why you should live an active, healthy lifestyle compared to a sedentary one IV. Preview I will tell you the benefits of eating right, staying active, and the effect on your overall health Body V. Point one: Nutrition A First, lets get an overview of nutrition 1. Nutrition is the science of food and its relationship to health 2. There are 6 basic nutrients; carbohydrates, protein, fat, water, vitamins, and minerals 3. Carbohydrates are you main source of energy that your body uses 4. Proteins are used for tissue maintenance, replacement, function, an growth 5. Fat is used tissue growth, hormone production, and to store calories 6. The last three nutrients; water, vitamins, and minerals, are there just to help the support/function of the body and to keep it strong 7. Talk about fast food VI. Point Two: Fitness A. Now that you know a little bit about nutrition, its time to learn how being active can improve all aspects of your life 1. When you are inactive, your heart has to work harder to pump blood. This caused stress both physically and mentally 2. Many people die from a lack of exercise rather that aging 3. 40 to 50 million Americans, or 25% of the population, is inactive 4. When you are inactive, you double the risk of obesity related disease and an early death 5. Exercise will boost brainpower (Exercise increases energy/serotonin levels in the brain, which leads to improved mental clarity-quote) 6. Exercise will reduce stress (Exercise produced a relaxation response that serves as a positive distraction 7. Exercise gives you energy (When you exercise, endorphins are released which means more energy for the rest of the day 8. Exercise help the process of aging (When you exercise, you build strength in your muscles, bones, and improve joints) 9. Exercise lets you eat more, to an extent (When you know that you exercised that day, you wont feel guilty when you eat that cookie) 10. Exercise is the easiest way to prevent disease (Heart disease/attack, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, and cancer) VII. Point three: Overall health A. Living a sedentary lifestyle and eating the wrong food will eventually lead to being obese 1. Obesity essentially is having too much body fat 2. You can calculate obesity by using BMI, or body mass index, which uses height and weight to see if you are average 3. Having a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese, which means 30% of your body weight is fat 4. There are a few ways why people become obese. It could be genetics, illness, psychology, and lifestyle 5. Chances are, you know some one who is obese. 1 in 3 American adults are considered obese. 6. Obesity can cause diabetes, high cholesterol, heart attack, hypertension, and cancer 7. It might be the first time in 300 years that the life expectancy will drop due to poor health 8. With all this said, what is I told you that I would pay you $320 to go run right now? You would do it right? Well that's how much active, healthy people save every year on medical expenses compared to people who live a sedentary life 9. When you are obese, your quality of life is diminished greatly 10. There was a man who had been bedridden, which means he was confined to his bed, for 14 years! (Continue story) Conclusion VIII. Review: I have just discussed why you should eat healthy, what the benefits of staying in shape are, and why being obese can have a devastating effect on you overall health IX. Action: With all this said, it's time for you to get out there and, eat right, and enjoy life to the fullest extent X. Wrap-up: We have learned that living a sedentary life can be devastating on your health. Do you want to be part of the 400,000, or living your life?
