The "Socialist Revolutionaries" (SR's) were a group of liberal-Socialists who formed in the beginning of the 1900's. They played a major role in the 1905 and 1917 revolutions.
At first they were a Democratic Socialist party, but they soon turned to militarism and terrorism. They weren't too friendly with the Bolsheviks because the SR's didn't support a Communist revolution. But they tried to work with each other during the 1917 Provisional Government.
Once the Bolsheviks took over in the October Revolution, the SR's were kicked out of the government and most were arrested during the Civil War.
Once Stalin came around, he had all the SR leaders remaining in Russia executed by 1937.

Yeah, they recieved 25%. The Socialist Revolutionaries got about 50% and were violently opposed to Bolshevism. Most other parties were also the same. Thus around 75% of the population was resistant to the Bolsheviks. So once they took power, they had to clamp down on the people to get them to obey.

Why do they become authoritative? Easy. Not a single Communist party has had popular support. (2 Communist parties, in Moldova and Cyprus, have won free elections and they are really anything but Communist).
Communists have a revolution thinking the "people" want it. When they realize the people aren't willing to give up their economic rights, property, food supplies, etc, they must force the people to comply. A LARGE population will still resist. The Communists will need jails to put the resistors. Once the government takes power, it's almost impossible to get back. There are tons of more reasons. But the lack of support is the main reason.
