Also, its very important to gas during your second (long) turn. this will take out the lead plane's guns.

To do the 1946 mission turn all your plans around and gas them. I just did it again to confirm and there is a bit of a trick to it.
You need to do your first turn on all four plans as tight as you can, the top 2 plans turn up and the bottom 2 planes turn down. The next turn is as long as you can make it. after that angle the planes so they are flying side by side and gas repeatedly. I finished in 6 rounds, no damage.
