Basically, a merit's something awarded when you fulfill certain conditions on this site, i.e. winning a poetry contest or making a very constructive comment on a flash game. The more constructive and grammatically correct your game comment is, the more chance it has to be liked and then noticed by a moderator. If the moderator deems your comment worthy, he'll award you a merit, which is worth 25 ap.
Don't forget that making a good comment doesn't necesserily means you'll get a merit, it also doesn't means you'll get it right away; sometimes, it can take years for moderators to notice a very old comment on a game so keep in mind that you're never garantueed to have a merit. The only thing you can do is strive to write good comment, or try your hand at poetry contests in the AMW section of the forums. Winning in such contests will award you a merit, but very talented poets dwell there so either way, earning merits is never easy. You just have to follow the code of ethics and always be as constructive as possible. If this wasn't helpful enough, I'll point you to a good thread where moderator extroardinaire Gantic explains the whole concept very well:

Here ya go, hope I've been helpful. Enjoy your time on Ag ^^.
