    How can I throw gem bombs like that? I tried to hold shift and then throw them on one of the wave-tiles to anger the monsters, but all it does is call the wave early.

    To enter the gem bombing mode, you press and hold shift and press 1 or b.

    Then you just have to click where you want to, to use the gem bomb.   :)
