Yes, he really does have cancer. If you go to his profile, you should see a link to his blog. He gives details on it there.
Everyone was actually scared for a while because there was a point where no one heard anything from him for about three months. He did eventually give an update, though, so we all knew that everything was okay.
The best we can do is hope and pray that he beats his cancer. Not to mention, give him our dedication and support and be patient until such time as he submits another game.
Also, keep in mind that he is currently working on a different game, and that he is probably only going to start working on other games such as Sonny 3 and Colony 2 when his current project is finished.
