  1. Basically, 0.999...=1 because it is not strictly greater than or less than one. Proving that it is not greater than one is kind of obvious. Proving that it is not less than one is a little more tricky. A kind of cheap way to do this would be to say that if it was less than one, there would have to be some number, "x", between 0.999... and 1. In general, if a<b, then there is some number (actually there are infinitely many numbers, due to the density of real numbers) "c" between a and b. You could even define c as (a+b)/2, or halfway between a and b.

But (0.999....+1)/2 is just 0.99999... (or 1). In other words, the number halfway between 0.999.... and 1 IS 0.999... (or 1). If I was to tell you that the number halfway between a and b was a, then you would clearly agree that a=b.

There is nothing wrong with the proofs you posted, except for the fact that they don't really explain anything. They are nice and clever, but I think proofs like these are the main reason why people are so skeptic about this problem, since they don't really analyze anything.

  2. Some people just really never do learn I suppose. What makes this even more entertaining is the fact that he goes on and on and on about how intelligent he thinks he is and what classes he's taking.

  3. I doubt we've seen the last of him either. The thing I find the most amusing though is that for all those people who get banned and try to circumvent the ban, the reason they get caught is because they keep doing the crap they were banned for in the first place. If they would keep their heads down, or change their attitude, no one would discover it was them or even if they did no one would really care, as they wouldn't be disruptive anymore.

  4. Lol. I'm just very observant. It's not like I am keeping a look out for him or anything.

  5. I don't know, the more and more I look at his posts, the more it seems that it's him.

    Key points why:

    1) He stated he takes A-Level classes as some sort of support.

    2) He claims to be a "true scientist"

    3) He dismisses off-hand other's articles/posts as immediately incorrect if they aren't exactly what he's already said.

    4) His way of speaking

    5) The clearly arrogant attitude

    6) The fact that he started off civil and then rapidly turns toward name calling and personal attacks.

    7) The pattern of him making a new account and being extremely active between 10am ~ 4pm.
