   Oh...I managed to leave out mentioning the most unique aspect of Gemcraft chapter 0: angering. 
   True, it is still a tower defense, but it becomes a tower defense where the player selects the difficulty (and wave reward) in real time, for a cost. 

   Of course, if you've come to the point where you loathe tower defense games (rather than just dislike them), then this probably won't change your mind.

   I strongly disagree with your assesment that gemcraft is a copied tower defence with new graphics.  the gameplay is quite unique; only one other tower defence game comes close; gem tower defence, but its combination system is awkward, clumsy, and inelegant.  gemcraft, and gemcraft chapter 0, have an elegant combinatorial system.
