Morals are simply another evolved trait pass on from our instincts. However, it isn't as necessary as the self preservation instincts, which is why morality and personal codes go right out the window when someone is hungry or thirsty. You also see this in animals, where sometimes they will seem to do literally anything to stay alive. The same is for us.
But this is another part of the religion problem. Where should your religion draw morality from. It sure as hell shouldn't be in Leviticus (one of their "moral teachings" is for the parent to be allowed to stone their child should he disobey them. Doesn't that sound terrible?). Another part of your religion problem is how much of the bible is literal, and how much metaphorical (which so far, no Christian can agree on). Instinctive morals are just so much better.
