They shoot out of their hands because cyborgs from A series (A25, A27, A28 and the discontinued A26) have a built-in E380 plasma gun, modified for each model.
A26s were discontinued due to a malfunction in their Central Processing Units, which caused them to shoot indiscriminately, friend or foe.
Such error has been fixed, but human personnel refuse to enter battlefield whith A26s. Nowadays, all solar grids are operated by A26s.
Some ask "how come a solar grid generates power at night, if that's when every Colony battle takes place?" Well, it SEEMS to be an earth night, but that's how a tipical night in minerva looks like: a different sun casts itself over Athenia (not appearing on battle screen; that is a moon). 'The sun is burning, in deepest space... That's the way things are'.
The solar grid harvests ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths.
