Yes. He was such a hipster. Not to mention he was sullen and didn't talk to anyone. The way he dressed was very hipster-esque. I think that was a big complaint I had about the movie.
I just assumed he dressed like a nyc highschool student?
That's kind of what I thought too. He's a more modern take on Peter Parker, an angstier, self-exiled nerd/misfit. As opposed to the pathetic nice-guy nerd that Tobey Maguire played so well.
IMO it makes for a funnier, wittier Spiderman. Always thought Maguire's Peter Parker was way too p*ssy even after he becomes Spidey. Which isn't to say I didn't scoff my fair share at Andrew Garfield's clothes and mannerisms, but I thought that had more to do with my hatred of teenagers than hipsters.
I thought Garfield was able to better capture that angsty teen feel that any teenager given an incredible gift would develop. This is mostly because he's actually not far away from his teen years, being in his early 20s, whereas Maguire was 30ish when he played Peter. IMO.

Garfield is actually 28, he just looks really young.
To me, Garfield was a little more whiny cry babyish than Maguire was. I bought Maguire as Spider-Man a little more than I did Garfield. I hate hipsters and I felt like that contributed to my dislike of Andrew Garfield. That and I really don't find him attractive but it seems like everyone else in the world does.
