To Kill A Mockingbird is an American classic that deserves a bit of everyone's time. Not for the shallow minded, I'm afraid. It's got a bit of every genre in it.
Try sherlock holmes. It isn't just a book with chapters. It is a series of stories so if you don't see one you like at first then flip through the book till you do. There are also full length books such as "The Hound of the Baskervilles" and "Study in Scarlet" and a few others that I can't think of the names of at this moment.
I recomend the Dexter series by Jeff Lindsay (Darkly Dreaming Dexter, Dearly Devoted Dexter, and so on). They're great books, and Jeff Lindsay is such a good author.

You have to read the Lord of the Rings books, and I mean all of them, except maybe the children of hurin and the unfinished tales. Also for mysteries, there is this little book called Two-minute Mysteries. A book about a series of simple crimes which are two pages a piece, with the answer at the bottom of the second page. link on amazon
