Is Global Warming real?

I've recently read a book (State of Fear, Michael Chrichton) which changed my mind greatly about Global Warming. The book goes on about how false everything the media says about global warming truly is. It presents hundreds of sources from a whole lot of sources (NASA, being the prevalent one)

Basically, major points that are not true about Global Warming:

-Polar Ice caps are actually freezing up. There is one tiny piece of Antarctica that is melting, and the general mass is not aware of this. The ice in Greenland and Antarctica can expand up to 11km daily.
-CO2 has risen by quite a step in the last 150 years. But, it does not in any way correlate with the warming of the Earth. From the 1940-1970's, CO2 has risen a lot, but during these 30 years the earth got colder.
-Urban Heat Island effect. Major cities like New York City are rising in temperature due to concrete and asphalt everywhere. In nearby cities in the same state(Albany in this case), the temperature decreased. New York city, from 1822-1993 the temperature has risen by 4,2 degrees Fahrenheit
Albany which is not far from NYC, 1820-2000, temperature decreases from 49.5 - 47.5 degrees fahrenheit.

And Albany is not an anomaly. Many other cities(around the world)are the same. McGill, NV, temperature falls. Guthrie, OK, temperature falls. Oswego, NY, temperature also falls. So basically, the only places where temperatures have risen in the last two hundred years is where major cities are at.

Opinions?

If one directly hits us and is big enough to do that, electronics would be the least of our worries.
In the popular science article, it talked about how lack of electricity would cause nuclear meltdowns within I think 48 hours, so they have to have a lot of spare generators nearby in order to prevent that.

Oh come on, scientists proved that global warming is caused every few thousand years, with a Ice Age after it.

please inform yourself befor shouting stuff.

it's proven that there are temperature changes, yes.
the difference is that in the past it it happened in thousends of years to get the changes we have seen occur the last 50 year.

in atleast the last 650.000 year the co2 level in our atmosphere has not been above the 300. it is however since 1950 and is today nearly hitting 400. almost double the amount it should be.

and our earth has only had 1 ice age befor and that was because there was to much volcanic ash in the atmosphere that blocked nearly all sunlight. we (humans) are all dead way befor the next ice age will occur. that can take a few hundred million year tho.

plz. inform yourself about the subject and don't be to ignored because you see all those other people being ignorend.
climate change is very real. you can deny it but it wont go away by it.

solar activity is peaking the end of this year, which, if the solar flares hit us, might end up wiping out all electronics.

solar activity is peaking?
there is no such thing... oh wait yea there is. but by the time it is going to peak it will be to late for earth and will it be blown away. by then our earth will be in the place where mars is now.

but your talking about solar flares.
you know what is interesting about solar flares.. you can't predict them untill they have already been released.
solar flares happen all the time. literally all the time.
they shoot out every way and only sometimes it precisely hit the earth. usualy when this happens we can can see the northern light all over the world or 1 side (depending on the power of the solar flare) in 2010 or 2011 we had the most powerfull solar flare hitting the earth ever recorded. did you mention it happening? no because even the most powerfull ever hitting us didn't do enough damage to fry some electronics

solar flares is nothing to be scared of and are usually completely harmless. and it has only a small effect on the temperature, for a small time.

You might do as well. Know why?

For example, earth has had at least five major ice ages. Also, each ice age is composed of glacials and interglacials. We are currently in an ice age, the Quaternary glaciation. More precisely, we're in the Holocene interglacial. Within that interglacial, there was a Medieval warm period and a subsequent Little ice age, which is not an ice age nor a glacial, but a period of unusual cold. We're recovering from that period of cold so it kinda makes sense that earth heats up faster. What we humans do, is slightly speeding up the process, but more importantly, our major impact will be the length of the coming warm period; we will certainly delay the next glacial.

He's not talking about solar flares... he's probably talking about solar cycles. I heard you like the NASA, so here you go

this will keep me sweet for the weekend. thx. maybe coming back on it next week =)

as reply on a short overlook:
by that definition we will stay in a ice age untill all the ice is gone.
doesn't sound very bad. but has a big inpack on habitable areas. and oxidant levels (not sure i got the right word there).

When a Republican plutocrat tells me that there is no such thing as global warming I suspect that he's got some trees he wants to chop down in order to line his pockets. Why should we let the environment stand between him and making more millions?

The sun goes through cycles of differing activity, and right now, we are in the middle of an 11 year cycle that peaks in early 2013. What this means is that there will be an increased occurence of CME's as well as an increase in their power. If one of these large CME's hits the earth at the correct angle, it will wipe out everything electronic in one big EMP.

@hahiha, solar flares are thought to be related to CME's
