Ranks doesn't always symbolize knowledge. If you post well than you can earn the respect of any gold king.

A merit is when a moderator or administrator approves of one of your comments, or in other cases, won in contests such as the Poetry contest and the Haiku contest.

Quoting moderator Freakenstein:
"A merit is a reward by a moderator. It is usually given for outstanding game comments or in certain contests like the Poetry contest or the Haiku contest found in the Art, Music and Writing section of this site."

Hope this helped.

They no longer will give users a merit if they win, they stopped doing that during mid-summer.

You don't write a merit. You write a good game comment and it might be rewarded with a merit.- Zophia.
