Now i have had many a debate over this. I believe poker IS a sport and i have reaosns to back it up.

1) It is shown on the 3 main canadian sport broadcasters, TSN, sportsnet, and The Score. (dont know about U.S)

2) In the tv guide it is listed green, which is the colour of sports.

3) The definition of a sport is a recreational activity that requires skill. Now i realize that there are endless definitions for sport, some including physical activity, others not. So this points DOES sort of fail...

4) There is a world series, world cup, etc. I mean c'mon i kno its just a name but C'moooooon. How many activities that aren't sports have a world series or cup?

Your thoughts on wether or not poker is a sport?

I wouldn't call it a sport, yet it is classified as one.

poker could be a sport because it requires skill.

Where's the athleticism? It's mostly luck of the draw combined with the ability to lie to people. No way is it a sport.

Chess is considered a sport by many...so yeah, poker's a sport. sports don't necessarily require athleticism...just skill...

It does take alot of skill. I play poker alot and sure there is luck but thats not everything. I think it is a sport.

It's not a sport, it's a card game. It's that simple. There is no real physical activity required to play the game of poker so it's not a sport, sorry.

honestly this is just another ongoing argument. It all depends on which side you're on.

I myself just consider it a card game since there are so many out there.

Well, ESPN does seem to show it on it's channel... And ESPN is a sports channel, so one could conclude that poker is actually a sport. But if you use the definition of "causing physical exertion"... then it does not qualify.

No its a game show, its a recreation activity that is not only physical. Sport is when its only physical recreation.

well...when u think about it... does poker require any more athletic skill than games which no one would ever question whether or not it's a sport...like...pool?
how about bowling?
golf?

pushing a pile of poker chips is as easy as rolling a big blue ball down a lane. Heck most of the proffesional bowliers in the world are more out of shape than the world's greatest poker players!

in golf, you can say the ball goes really far because ur strong, but in reality it's the club that's doing 95% of the work. It's mostlyh a game of skill. the only athleticism involved is standing up.

in pool, once again a game of skill where the only athleticism is being able to stand and hold a stick.

these games are constantly refered to as sports and require very little athleticism. Either those aren't sports, or poker is a sport.

This is a so so thing, cause most of it is luck.. but you gotta know how to use the cards right. It does take skill as well. So maybe it's a sport but Im not sure completly if it should be..

I think it would be a strategy game that would be put in with games like Chess, Checkers, and other strategy games that require more thought and luck than physical strength than Soccer or Basketball.
