normal levels
you can beat all levels with barracks only, like this> don't worry about air units, you can shoot them down with upgraded legionnaire spear ability and the archer hero
when you get the barbarians, aired units will be piece of cake barbarians have very good air and ground offensive (don't waste gold on nets) from the point where you get barbarians in every level first build like 2 barracks + 1 instantly upgraded to barbarians, and get them throwing axes as soon as you can, when all your barbarians have throwing axes, it's time to build a new barracks
the barracks must always be on the crossroad right in front of your doorstep, it is risky but most effective as you don't want to split forces and you can pave your enemy's way with legionnaires before they even get to your soldiers
also spawn legionnaires as often as you can, but let them throw their spears - they are good ranged offensive
keep meteors as a failsafe when there's a leak or your soldiers are losing it against heavy armoured enemies (which shouldn§t be a problem because barbarians respawn too fast to let the enemy pass )
believe it or not special abilities, 5 barbarian mead halls + hero can do better job than some mages and archers and dwarves combined
