If I were to venture a guess, I'd say it's not uncommon for "free" content sites to require subscription for some of their content. This may help entice people to join up and help build an active community, or perhaps registered users may garner income for the site that unregistered users don't, whatever.

Essentially, there's little point in complaining about it, rather turn it around, and be happy with whatever free content you are dealt. None of that stuff actually does come out of the blue, all for free, of course. (Websites need hosting, internet traffic costs bandwidth, etc., not even to mention the necessary input and upkeep to keep it all running, of course.) So if all it takes is a registration, and not a penny out of your pocket (and last time I checked, a lot of stuff here still requires no subscription at all), I guess do count your blessings, indeed. One is of course always free to not register.

Here's an interesting article for all of us who are under any illusions just how "free" all that computing of ours is: The monster footprint of digital technology, http://www.lowtechmagazine.com/2009/06/embodied-energy-of-digital-technology.html . For those of us who happen to read Dutch, the (Belgian) main edition of that online magazine has more to offer (the English version doesn't seem to very directly link back to it): http://www.lowtechmagazine.be/alle-artikels-over-computers-en-gadgets.html . I guess in English, this may also be worth one's while: The right to 35 mobiles, http://www.lowtechmagazine.com/2008/02/the-right-to-35.html .

Tesla, come on. You know better then this. If I continue to feel your posting questions just for the sake of posting, I will start removing your comments. It's very plainly obvious you're still attempting to get a 1,000 forum post goal. That is not acceptable.
