It's better to do the mission yourself, especially for longer missions and higher levels. You can only guarantee 100% return rate when you do it yourself. Otherwise, you're needless endangering your survivors and taking them away from the compound for longer times. If you're low level you can just auto the 5/10 minute ones with other survivors while doing one of the searches yourself since it'll go faster.
