Fight the New Drug on Facebook

This group is dedicated to the fight against what they claim to be a new kind of drug. or what is more commonly referred to as pornography.

The group states that they use science to fight against this drug (which they equate to alcohol and drug addictions) is a danger to society and must be fought against.

Thoughts?

"New".

Well let's make one thing clear. There are people addicted to pornography. And it usually depicts an unrealistic image.

That said, simple awareness of the problem does miracles. I don't see a reason to "fight" the thing as a whole. I don't know what this group wants to do against it, and I don't know what they mean by "science", but I don't think theirs is a good approach. Based on my current state of knowledge that is.

Pornography can't be fought against. It's been a part of human history ever since we began using animal blood to paint pictures on cave walls. The internet is 99.9% pornography. Besides, there is nothing wrong with pornography as long as the people shown are doing it of their own free and are being treated as human beings, and not just objects.

When you want to claim Science is backing what you say you might want to provide some cited sources of said science. This facebook page seems like they are trying to take more of a "it's morally wrong" stance then from any actual harm. I suspect the real issue sites like this facebook page has is with sex an sexuality in general rather than in porn.

Of course there are those who become addicted to porn. One can become addicted to anything. I wouldn't be at all surprised if there was even a chemical addiction aspect to some of those who become addicted given the sorts of chemicals released in the brain from sexual activity. Though it should be noted that porn addiction is not considered an official mental disorder. Far as I can tell so far it seems a bit hard to find reliable statistics on the prevalence of porn addiction as it often lumps in sex addiction, which is a different issue. It also often conflates what constitutes a porn addiction.
It seems sex and porn addiction includes a feeling of shame and/or distress associated with the act after the fact. (in the case of porn addiction distress associated with the viewing of porn, while sex addiction displays distress with the act of having sex.) This again would seem to make it hard to determine accurate statistics given the stigma that many place on sexuality in general.

Of course the porn industry does have it's dark side. There are people who get coerced into it. There is also a rampant issue with STDs in the business. (Herpes, not HIV was the most prevalent STD.) Though I suspect much of this is due to the fact that many in the industry have to pay for their own testing rather than having it provided for them on a regular basis.

Actually porn sites only make up about 12% of internet sites. Though it tends to be among the most searched material online.

From my understanding, they want it to be illegal.

and I don't know what they mean by "science", but I don't think theirs is a good approach.

Biased science, or biased statistical work. At least, that is how it seems.
Instead of finding the evidence/facts and creating the conclusion with them, they created the conclusion and are using it to find the evidence/facts.
(of which a lot of their facts tend to be generalizations)

This facebook page seems like they are trying to take more of a "it's morally wrong" stance then from any actual harm.

-Their biggest argument is that "it kills love", which I find to be a complete generalization.
-Of course, there are those that seem to just have jealousy issues (i.e. "why do you need to masturbate to porn when you have me?&quot
-A few arguments that porn desensitizes us to violence, but this is a weak
argument given that almost every form of media does so.

Of course there are those who become addicted to porn. One can become addicted to anything

I would argue that the addiction is more in masturbation with porn just being more of a "means to an end" or a way to quickly receive the stimuli.

-----

They also have some personal testimony videos..my favorite being one with a guy named Sam. In it, he states that what got him to quit porn and realize it was bad was because a girl he loved broke up with him because he watched porn. This gives a good indication of their main argument.

The fact that they call it a 'new' drug totally invalidates their entire argument. Porn has been around for ages, and people getting way to into it has been happening since its inception.

i read somewhere that porn actually isnt an addiction. that it doesnt make the brain let out the hormones that actually cause it an addiction.

its not just porn. sometimes people call a bad habbit they cant control a drug or an addiction in order to appear more like a victim.

not a scientist so i cant actually give my own scientific opinion but i bet that most of those people are either jealous or (no offence to my religious friends) religious.

they arent fighting the "addiction" they are fighting porn in general. they just use addiction as an excuse. if im not wrong there is a chocolate addiction. is the way to fight it to make chocolate illegal?

I would say that earlier in their movement they had more religious backers..or at least more vocal ones. The ones now legitimately think they have science on their side and don't mention god that much.

The jealousy thing, as I stated, is also a bit rampant.

If you could find that, that would be nice. Would like to read it.

Something like that is rather hard to say, since most people aren't as open as to say they watch porn.

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with trying to eradicate porn. It is an addiction. I personally have seen what it can do to people, and it's pretty much the same as alcohol and dangerous narcotics. It runs down peoples quality of life, and they become a burden on society, mostly due to their putting a good chunk of their money into the addiction. After a while, they are dumping so much money into the addiction that they start running low on money for food and shelter, hence they go and sign up for foodstamps and welfare benefits, and continue putting their money into the addiction while we support them via welfare.

I've personally seen it, and I find it rather annoying that they are soaking up my tax money for personal pleasure, hence I wouldn't mind if it was eradicated.

How many other things should also be eradicated?

Bear in mind, this is a -personal experience- and not one by everyone that watches porn.

so im guessing you didnt read this part (if any) of my comment:

pretty much anything that we do or use too much will hurt us. calling it an addiction just to make it more dramatic is just...... that. and even if it is an addiction, its still not how you fight one.

sorry for the double.

here is a link for an artcile that might explain this a little bit.

http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/women-who-stray/201307/your-brain-porn-its-not-addictive

over all, this reminds me of a meating i was in. i actually cant remember the subject of it but eventually the lady asked us why people rape and gave us 3 answers. obviously most of the people (espacially the girls) immidiatly choose the "he is crazy/has a mental illness" option. i personally thought its pretty obvious that its his fetish to control.

people jump to define something they dont like like rape or porn in an extreme way like mental illness and addictions but you have to stay true to facts and logic.

they say watching too much porn leads to yadayadayada but what IS too much porn anyway? i remember reading that most people watch porn in the first place.

Until the research is linked in, that blog post is hardly a reliable source of information. A blog post on some mail-in magazine dumbed-down for the masses is not where I'd go to for reliable news.
Furthermore! The author of that article is -far- from reliable. He, as far as I can tell, has not published any papers on his research or discoveries. He merely pens books that go against the flow. That's not actual research backed up by other professionals in his field. It's just some schmuck trying to make a buck by saying "Listen! All those other doctors are lying to you! Read my book to find out the 'truth'!"
