METHOD 1 - MIXING ORANGE/BLACK WELL
You start with g1 gems and combine them in such order:

A=(((((o+o)+o)+o)+o)+o)
B=((A+(o+o))+(o+o))
C=(B+(((o+o)+o)+(o+b)))
D=(C+(((o+o)+(o+b))+b))
E=((((o+o)+o)+(o+b))+b)
F=(((o+b)+b)+((b+b)+b))
G=(E+F)
H=(D+G)

H is the final orange/black grade 5 gem with cost of grade 6 and huge specials. You can use this formula only once.

METHOD 2 - SUPERGEM UPGRADING
You can apply it to pure orange, pure black, orange/black and orange/black/red gems.
first, get your gem to upgrade (I'll call it "g&quot

A=(g+g)+((g+g)+g)
B=((((((g+g)+g)+g)+g)+g)+g)
C=(g+g)
D=(((B+C)+C)+A)

D is the final supergem with grade +3 and cost x16. You can (even should) repeat this method every time when upgrading gem.

You use method 1 once and then on resulting gem method 2 till your mana ends for mana gem. Just don't forget to add red at some point, best g1 to one of 16 copies of your gem in method 2.
For amplifiers I recommend now pure orange (black isn't amped anymore) so you grab g1 and apply method 2. Amplifiers with this method should be 3 grades lower than mana gem.

[EDIT]
After a moment of thinking I realized that this metod works also for killing gems, but you have to farm kills on black/red gem and add it in some moment. Feel free to try.

Objection. Red falls out at 40 grade. What do you do to stop that?

add red at grade 40, not grade 1

IMPORTANT THING!
I've set up gemcraft irc channel, it's better than forum for on-line talk, and troubleshooting
#gemcraft at freenode.

How to join from browser:
Go to this site, enter your nick and #gemcraft as channel.

If sombody wants I can post "method 2" 16x scheme but in more optimal and more complex 32x or 64x version. Recommended for extreme players (beating gem grade records or something) only.

I'd love to see the 64x version, if you wouldn't mind.

OK, 64x combining scheme, but not tested - raw output from my program. Even though I think it will work

0
1 = 0+0
2 = 1+0
3 = 2+0
4 = 1+1
5 = 3+0
6 = 5+0
7 = 1+6
8 = 4+4
9 = 7+1
10 = 9+1
11 = 4+7
12 = 10+2
13 = 12+3
14 = 8+11
15 = 13+5
16 = 7+15
17 = 11+16
18 = 14+17

18 is final 64-worth 5 grades higher gem.

dose your program just test all possibilities to create a gem with 16 gems and gives back the combining method which is optimal?

Something about, but testing all possibilities with 64 gems would need so much time that I have to cut gems that I'm certain are not optimal.

It would be very hard and time-consuming to compute 64-version of Method 1, I will work on it though.

New version of method 1 for gems with 6 orange amplifiers one grade lower than mana gem.

and 0 and 1 are single gems? if so are they different levels

There was description that 0 is black and 1 orange, accidentally got deleted.

Proper version:
0 = (g1 black)
1 = (g1 orange)
2 = 0+0
3 = 1+1
4 = 2+0
5 = 3+0
6 = 3+1
7 = 4+0
8 = 6+0
9 = 6+1
10 = 7+0
11 = 9+1
12 = 8+2
13 = 11+1
14 = 10+2
15 = 13+3
16 = 15+3
17 = 14+12
18 = 16+5
19 = 18+12
20 = 19+17

Ok, THAT is confusing.

The main confusion though, is in the need to duplicate gems. It would certainly help if gems that needed to be duplicated (or triplicated) were called out.

Still, based on the cost, I got it right ... but it took a couple tries.

You can try to draw whole gem combining tree and make more user-friendly version. I just didn't have lust.

and using this last (improved) method there's my shiny new g78 equivalent mana gem with g77 equivalent amplifiers

psorek and thunder, you cannot be thanked enough for your efforts in furthering the crusade for the vaunted grade 100 gem. Going back to restart for even more ridiculous mana pool size.
