You get 10 free fights per day. You are able to challenge someone up to 5 ranks ahead of you each time you fight. Thus, you can move up roughly 50 ranks per day... but that doesn't take into account others challenging from below you who manage to win! You can also spend 4 diamonds per fight to gain additional fights per day (for the first few "extra" ones).

Lower number means higher rank. When you challenge you are always fighting a higher ranked army.
