Hey, generally speaking, the actual SAO game in the Anime would only be worth the play for the VR experience. The VRMMOs in the series have too many lacking features for a Medieval MMO. You can't change your avatars look, it lacks a good tutorial if you notice and YOU CAN'T EVEN USE MAGIC in SAO!!!!
Plus you can't even decide your character's look, see class details during character creation, or fly for more that 10 minutes in Alfheim Online (but I'd rather play a VRMMO like that) and you can't change your character's look in Gun Gale Online (sadly for the girly looking Kirito in Sword Art Online season 2).
Also, if you like Sword Art Online, then you'll LOVE "Log Horizon".

You can't change your avatar because of what happened in the show and you can't change much of yourself IRL either. There is no tutorial because, 1), it's more realistic, 2), the player you follow knows what he's doing so there may indeed be a tutorial that he just skipped.

I've already answered the avatar problem. The limit of flying is an important mechanic, without it players could just skip over most ground battles, leaving out a massive part of the game. And there is another avatar question. Also the show has been out for a while but no need for any kind of spoilers.
Also, if you like Sword Art Online, then you'll LOVE "Log Horizon".
