I've been in forum games for a while and have seen a few people talking about the game Town of Salem. I figured there was a thread for it here, and it turns out there is none. I thought I'd add a thread for it. Here is a intro to ToS(Town of Salem) taken from the official website to anyone who has never heard of it:
Town of Salem is a browser-based game that challenges players on their ability to convincingly lie as well as detect when other players are lying. The game ranges from 7 to 15 players. These players are randomly divided into alignments - Town, Mafia, Serial Killers, Arsonists and Neutrals. If you are a Town member (the good guys) you must track down the Mafia and other villains before they kill you. The catch? You don't know who is a Town member and who is a villain. If you are an evil role, such as a Serial Killer, you secretly murder town members in the veil of night and try to avoid getting caught. Town of Salem has 29 unique roles ensuring a different experience each time you play. Before a game starts players are put into a lobby where the host can select what roles will be in the game. Players are then assigned roles at random from the list of chosen roles. Players have an in-game role card that explains their roles abilities and alignments.
This game, as stated above, is free and requires no download. Here's a link to the site: Town of Salem. If you join, don't forget to state one of us as a referrer!
I won as werewolf once. Basically no one found me the whole game, and people seemed to be curious about what I was, but only on the full moon nights. The game lasted 5 turns. There was sk, arsonist, mafia and me, so the town was trampled quickly. Then everyone attacked me at once for some reason on a full moon. It was purely luck.
Couple of people answered, but they all got really annoyed! Next day, they all voted against me!
That could have easily gone against you. I remember when I was Jester, I annoyed everyone and on the second night I was killed by mafia, killed by SK, and doused by arsonist.
Annoying people is sort of a gamble. If you're annoying, mafia or sk usually doesn't bother you, because you distract the town. Jailor also usually has better things to do. Vigilante, however, will not think twice about shooting you. I also wanted to smash my computer yesterday when I was mafia. There was 3 non-mafia and 3 mafia left, so victory was imminent. One of the remaining town, a sheriff, had found that I was a mafia. I admitted it, because we were about to win anyway. The three remaining town voted for me, and I was feeling pretty safe because I had the mafia backing me up. And then one betrayed me. They lynched me, of course, and town eventually won. When the mafia member asked him why he did it afterward in the ending screen, he said he didn't want to seem suspicious and get hung. And this is why I haven't been playing lately.
he said he didn't want to seem suspicious and get hung
Annoying people are nothing compared to these guys! Jailors who misclick the "execute" button the last second (and after you give them your role, abilities, AND will), Vigilantes who shoot anyone, Escorts who keep Roleblocking you despite the fact that every kill capable role kills every night, and town investigatives who don't keep a will!
I love playing as town. Town investigative roles are some of my favorites. And the role I really thrive in as a Town member is the Jailor. I always get results by killing the sk, at least one mafia member (in classic), or both. But I cannot tolerate such people. They offer nothing, are away most of the time, and they do stupid things too.
Also, somebody needs to teach ToS players that playing as a Jester DOES NOT equal being dumb! Every time I play as a jes, I manage to draw at least a little bit of suspicion. So I accuse known town members to get lynched and most of the times it works. However, many times, said town members start shouting in the chat, swearing and all-round bashing me for "being an idiot" most of the times even after my identity as a Jester is revealed.
Such people can (and most of the times do) ruin a good ToS game.
Agreed, Doombreed. I have another story of clueless players. I was playing ToS with Saph the other day, and there were three people left: 2 town, 1 maf. I was dead, and was mafia. Usually, mafia will lose in this situation, so I wasn't too upset when he revealed as mafia, and tried to side with one of the townies. He thought that the person was mafia because his name looked like a dead mafia member's name, (the names were "wreyn" and "reyn" and because the mafia tab glitched and still showed the dead member with the confusing name. His reaction was hilarious when town hung him and won.
You wait in a queue, once in you have no idea who you are playing with (so you can't make sure your friends are in the same game) or the possible roles which are then shown on the role list in the game but apart from that it's practically the same as playing any but you know what the roles are.
