Right. This idea has apparently been flying around recently. So I decided to create a thread for it. Good place to start don't you think?

For those who don't know, a new forum game is in the making. The current concept is to allow word based arena style battles to take place with standard ground rules. Users can fight each other with fictional characters

Of course it still needs some work. This is just the main concept and so, this is the place to post ideas. I've had this idea a long ago but it worked well in a chat box really, not so much in a forum...

Tagging @HahiHa (First one to express interest in making such a game), @SirLegendary , @etg2002 , @Swarmlord2 and @armorplayergc

Ideas that have been suggested:

Time limit of 24 hours for each user to post a move.

Dice rolls for hits and (possibly) criticals

Elements

Different types of attacks and dodges

Tomorrow I will post my (refined) ideas. In the meantime, everyone can look through this and/or post his/her own suggestions. This already seems like it's going to be big xD

Looking forward to facing you in an honorable duel!

'd say speed shouldn't affect hit ratio. I think that speed is pretty dominating that way too. Without speed, it's harder to hit or dodge. A little discourages non-speed builds imo.

Non speed builds can be endurance builds. Without speed however, the only secondary stat will be endurance. There is no tactical depth into this. You can only go one way. Strength or will as your primary stat and endurance as your secondary. Besides, speed only makes it easier to hit, not that much harder. The difference between speeds must be massive for you not to be able to hit. If the enemy speed is double that of yours then you can still hit more than 50% of the times, since you hit on a 9+.

That's why I sugested speed. So that you can either be fast and frail, or slow but tough

As for the dice pool system, it has to be so that you may be simply levelled down in case you need to fight lower level characters. So that if someone is level 4 and you are level 10 but you both want to have a duel, you can discard all the extra dice you've got since level 4 and fight them in equal terms.

alright, since this is now a "Thing", i am going to add some things i have found are important from the time i was making a board game.
1. there MUST, repeat MUST, be a attack list. THIS. IS. CRUCIAL. otherwise, the attacks could all go to the land of Herp-Da-Derp and get really unbalanced. learned that one the hard way.
2. a few elements you may want to consider.
Energy
Psionic (Mind based. if there was, say, a will stat, that would affect this.)
Undead (summon minions instead of attacking directly)
and finally, Plasmic (using heavily energized gases, or plasma.)
3. if we are doing elemental combinations, there should be some form of limiter and name in place. i already have a few ideas, so here are some. (these are based on 3 element maximum)
Mech: Physical-Tech. can be paired with Energy, Plasmic, lightning, and fire.
Ghost: Plasma-Undead. can be paired with Dark and Light.
Hellfire: Fire-Dark. this one is interesting, as it can only be paired with Poison.
And lastly, Storm: Lightning-Water, can be paired with anything BUT Tech.
i hope i contributed also, i do want to join this if it does happen.
