It is 3050 the world is at peace we have lasers and mach 10 planes we have moved to the moon and are heading for mars. the humans are advancing rapidly our earth is clean and we are cleaning space the success of rockets is 99.99 percent so once a year a rocket may explode. All is perfect but as the convoy of humans approach mars 1000 lasers vaporize every ship. the alien wars are on.

Humans stupid compared to aliens but there battle skills are honed to perfection.
Trooper wearing a light suit they move quickly and are skilled fighters. Using the deadly mk12 blaster they can vaporize an alien in a split second. Starfighters the pilots of space highly skilled in all aspects they can fight well enough to escape from aliens and in the air can fight off many ships. with the Spacefighter mk13 they can pump out enough lasers to paralyze a battleship with the maneuverability to take on any fighter.
hover tanks These are the soldiers that can press the attack fast all terrain and with cannon to draw a fighters attention they can fighrt off many aliens with the m45 Stryker with a mk9 machine gun and a proton cannon.
Aliens Highly intelligent and and with x-ray vision the aliens seem the elite but they do not fight well and communication is poor
shape shifter these are the alien troopers they can change color and shape allowing them to go any were but they do not have a wide range of things and can only shape shift for a short time. with the extraculator laser they can kill a soldier in a second.
vultures are the pilots of aliens they can fly excellently enough to out maneuver most starfighters but they fight poor. there vultures craft are powerful with the same skills as the mk13.
tunnelers These are tanks to a sort which can dig but are slow and on land they are very rickety which affects the aim of there cannon but can launch surprise attack anywhere. with the tunneler the relatively small cannon of 100 mm at the bore gives the tanks gun a much better velocity than the hover tanks.

Sorry for the double-post, but what is the limit to the alien's shapeshifting abilities? Can they only transform into things near their size or can they turn into animals or plants?

I flew escort for the transports taking the first waves of troopers to mars 3 tanks were at the start of each landing craft so approximatley 300 tanks and 100,000 troopers with 200 fighters escorting my regular forward laser had been replaced with a smaller tank cannon for taking out fortified positions. as we got within sight of mars the fighters whipped ahead and circled. One laser fired and i dove on it firing a short blast fom my cannons the fortiufacation crumpled and little people ran out the samll guns on the ships fired at them while the battleship's gun's fired at the surface making craters for the landing we circled for an hour and then the first troops touched down the attack had begun
