Ahh yes a brief and to the point informative topic is always what we need.

Steam is a community of computer gamers pretty much, and the ID is the user name, simply.

It's also important to point out steam owns ValvE which makes half life and all source Games including Counter Strike, Team Fortress Two, Half Life Two Deathmatch, Day of Defeat source.
A common addition and misconseption is portal, but that was made privately and sponsered by steam.
