First, I will post the overall rules, and then I will post the specifics about this week.

Original rules, as stated by Ubertuna:

It must fit the week's theme.
It must be submitted by the deadline.
It cannot have inappropriate language in it.
It cannot be stolen (if you plagiarize, we will find you).

Also:

The poem must be created for this contest
A user cannot win two weeks in a row (though everyone is welcome to submit every week!)
Only one submission per user will be accepted

As we all know, the winner will recieve a merit, and their poem will be featured on the _Poetry_ page.

OK, on to this week's topic...Again, we are having a style instead of a theme. Also, this week we are having TWO WEEKS to do it, instead of the usual one. Why? Because this will be an EPIC poem. Or, rather, a parody of an epic poem. Generally, epic poetry is very long, and tells the serious story of a heroic figure. Well, this week, the epic figure is YOU! Write a long poem (I'll leave the definition of 'long' up to you, but give it a good go) about the heroic story of you! It can be silly, serious, whatever... just have fun with it. You have two weeks, so have a great time!

Is Independence Freedom?

It's been weeks since you called,
And I've almost gotten over you.
But then I see a sign,
And it makes me remember.

It's been weeks since you dumped me,
My heart's had time to heal.
But then something reminds me of your face,
And it splits in two again.

Independence is not freedom.
That I know for sure.
For if they were one and the same,
I wouldn't have met you.

The memories of us,
Sustain me day to day.
I always think you'll come back,
Sunset brings on the disappointment.

Had I never met you,
Then truly, I'd be free.
However I'm chained to this beautiful rock,
That tortures and kills a spirit.

Every night I think of us,
And what we could have been.
A misplaced word, an airy thought,
Split us apart, never to rejoin.

So am I truly free?
I have my independence from you.
But freedom isn't free,
It always comes at a price.

I lay awake at night,
As my mind drifts to past memories.
I might have my independence,
But I'll never be free.

I'll be out of town when judging is, but I hope I do well!

Oh, I placed! Yay for me!!!

Let me try again.

Unbound
He writhes in pain, his face twisted in agony.
He beseeches the sky to escape the wanton misery.
His cries echo throughout the air.
He begins to climb the long stair.
And once on top, he is transformed.
He is freed, he is reformed.
He is the Phoenix, unbound.

I forgot to add this line.

Nothing can hold him firm.
He soars the heavens alone, unbound.

Independence, what a funny word,
A word many people have never heard.
It as different definitions,
For people on different missions.
What are these missions you say?
Let me tell you, away.

Some believe that it is freedom,
Can you believe them?
A word that seems so far out of grasp,
A word that they can just not clasp.
But do they give up on it,
Not even a little bit.

That is all I have for now. Hopefully I can add more in.

I am but an acorn, growing upon a tree.
I have a bunch of acorns in my tree branch family.
They make me feel happy when I feel alone,
They've grown up around me in our little forest home.
Sometimes the wind blows, and we get caught up in the breeze;
A few of my acorn friends have fallen with the leaves.
I depend on my branch to keep me strong and well,
But I know the time will come when I will join those who fell.
So days will pass and months will, too,
And I will stay through winds that blew and blew,
Til one picks me up and carries me away,
And then I will find a nice, cozy place to stay.
I will make a home in the soft brown soil,
Maybe rest for a while, endure Winter's toils,
Until I sprout my roots and grow strong and tall,
Supporting myself, though I once was small.
Yet for now, I am still just a nub on a tree,
Though I look forward to days in which I will no longer be.

^^^Tada, obviously these days my mind immediately goes to weird places.

Oh, and hi errybody. Long time no poetry!

sparkler bombs going off from end to end
watching fireworks as they fly and bend
sitting on the grass of the dead
yet I shall hold down my head
knowing that people are dying
tortured in their bloody crying
the uncaring scum that insult
those that die from the cults
those that die,or have soon to die
all say say goodbye to their family
a flood in their head
and they are dead
escaping from this horrid place
their death brought to them from a suitcase
and the ****ed of the souls
meet the end filled with fiends and gouls.

Well, I placed. ( I think? )

Anyway... here's a poem.

Reds, Blues
Purples and Orange
All bursting in the night sky.

Children screaming everywhere.
It's the 4th of July!

Country grass
Half moon
And an emotional cry

Solute the flag
It's the 4th of July!

Nothing can beat
Getting away from heat
Or at least, you try

Everything's perfect
It's the 4th of July

Now colors have stopped
And everyone walks away
Everyone says goodbye

How great was
The 4th of July?

A short poem, and not one of my best. But I tried.
Older people with more experience will have better luck.
Just wanted to try. Bye! Good luck to all who are trying!

As I stare down the barrel to his bayonet knife,
I can't help but wonder if I will really lose my life.
Fighting for a freedom that seemed so sweet,
But reality hit me hard, and it made me knees weak.

I realized that we could never win this war;
England's army is our size, times forty-four...

We have farmers with pitchforks
And boys with no aim.
They have men who have missions,
And their whole lives to train.

I look at the redcoat with a smile on my face,
I point my gun up, and he meets his fate.

My body runs cold now, and my tears hit the ground,
I hope to be remembered, and I hope our freedom is found.

I know this isn't really EXACTLY Independence Day, but this is like a part one thing.

Part two?

_____

I hear the rumble of a far-away boom,
Probably fireworks, I aptly assume.

People don't even care about the true meaning,
They just want to throw parties with barbecue eatings.

I don't care about the parties and fun,
I would rather remember the damage that was done.

My ancestors fought for this country's Independence,
We went from colonies to a country; an astonishing transcendence.

We parted from the ignorant England,
Bid adieu to Europe's control.

And because we fought for our rights,
On this wonderful night,
We became the nation; free, and whole.

_____

They are combined into one, but please understand the massive gap in time between the two.

ok, ok i redid it once, i swear this is the final copy

Another poem about freedom

Freedom, is never free,
And the moment we stop fighting for it
thatâs the moment it will cease to be.

Freedom is a muscle,
And it needs be exercised every day
Itâs the integral part of the American heart
And it can never be taken away.

The socialists and capitalists,
At work in our fair country
Are the thing we must exercise our muscle on
Or it will go into dystrophy.

We all must stand as brothers,
And on our own as well;
Freedomâs fight is forever,
or surely it will be quelled

Freedom is never free
And the moment you each stop fighting for it,
Thatâs the moment it will be taken from ye.

Tyrant

Ageless cretin upon a throne of white;
Glimmering dully in the baleful light.

Your world is that of fire and ashes.
Nothing but a kingdom of dust to choke on.

No shame, no remose, no love.
Your claim is that of throne
That none else can hold.
Oh masked wretch, what say you to this?
Nothing. There is no answer,
But the wind.

The peals of thunder across the land,
Lighting fires with burning brand,
Delivering the justice of steel,
Demanding that your slaves kneel;
Before throne they cannot see.

I bid you rise, but you are gone.
I bid you rebel, but you are gone.
I bid you speak, but you are gone.
I bid you rebuld, but you are gone.

One man, one rule, one mask, one throne.
There he sits, mark him, in the baleful light.
There he sits upon his throne, dull white.
That cadaver of a chair, all made of bone.

Ruler of a land of dust, you are last,
Free to do as you choose forever more.
No subjects in which to cast,
And beat them bloody on the floor.

We should just have any one judge for three or four rounds, then automatically switch. Possibly a rotation, I don't know. All I know, and this is definitely from firsthand experience, is that all judges eventually find their way out sooner or later. Some it is sooner, others later. I think unreliable, and quite frankly hectic judging with the constant requirement for somebody else to have some initiative is the main reason the contest is fizzling, though it is following the trend in the community as a whole.

Man, you'd think we would have figured this out sooner.

An Former Unreliable Judge

And this round is in the books! I'm only going to do the top 3 this round rather than mention every single entrant, but know that everyone who submitted did a great job!

3rd Place: wolf1991!
Great use of vocabulary, gave the poem a very classical, theatrical feel to it! Truly sounds like it was written in an earlier century!

2nd Place: MoonFairy!
America's proudest holiday seen from the point of view of two different Americans from completely different centuries... very clever! That time lapse truly made this poem wonderful!

1st Place: zakyman!
Not only was your poem original in the sense that it was completely different from all the other entries, but it had an emotional depth to it so strong it could only have come from within! Amazingly written... the sadness and heartache conveyed in this poem are expressed perfectly! Congratulations on your victory!

As for the rest of y'all, I hope to see every single one of you next round! =)

Because it's July, I'll give you an easy and fun theme... the new theme is Summer and the deadline is Friday, July 20!

See y'all next round!
