First, I will post the overall rules, and then I will post the specifics about this week.

Original rules, as stated by Ubertuna:

It must fit the week's theme.
It must be submitted by the deadline.
It cannot have inappropriate language in it.
It cannot be stolen (if you plagiarize, we will find you).

Also:

The poem must be created for this contest
A user cannot win two weeks in a row (though everyone is welcome to submit every week!)
Only one submission per user will be accepted

As we all know, the winner will recieve a merit, and their poem will be featured on the _Poetry_ page.

OK, on to this week's topic...Again, we are having a style instead of a theme. Also, this week we are having TWO WEEKS to do it, instead of the usual one. Why? Because this will be an EPIC poem. Or, rather, a parody of an epic poem. Generally, epic poetry is very long, and tells the serious story of a heroic figure. Well, this week, the epic figure is YOU! Write a long poem (I'll leave the definition of 'long' up to you, but give it a good go) about the heroic story of you! It can be silly, serious, whatever... just have fun with it. You have two weeks, so have a great time!

Calculated Love
Or, what you get when your girlfriend is the daughter of a mathematician

My love for you is a Riemann sum
Of rectangles, the curve becomes.
My love for you is exponential,
Hoping infinity is our potential.
My love for you is derivative,
Where it is fully positive.
My love for you is isosceles
For I seek two equalities.
My love for you is pi over two,
Because I know it's right, that's true.
My love for you can only go
As e to the i-pi plus one is O.
My love for you exceeds my small domain,
Ascending to the highest plane.
My love for you transcends all prose
But finds image in a polar rose.

These two bits don't make much sense to me.

I'm guessing that relationship is not at multivariable calculus yet.

The Riemann sum is a way to find an approximation of the area under a curve.

e^(i(pi))+1=0 is known as Euler's identity, and boy, is it a beaut. It has your major constants (e, i, pi, 1, and 0) as well as addition and multiplication, your basic operators. Truly a work of art in itself.

Yes, but I meant with respect to the poem, as a metaphor.

Er, Gantic, wouldn't that depend on what kind of meaning you derive from the word love?

For example, I can interpret the Riemann curve metaphor as being a play on the whole being greater than the sum of the parts :P

And Parsat has already given plenty of room for romantic notions in his explanations of Euler's identity!

Happy Valentines Honey

Gazing and touching the screen fondly,
I always feel a wave of happiness,
Peering at the cute words longingly,
I always feel that pang of sadness.

A chance meeting they sometimes call it,
Cupid's a fan of cosmic mysteries,
The Net where the love bug bit,
And the rest they say is history.

Will you tell me just one thing honey?
Can you feel this love half way across the world,
Does it warm you and make you feel fuzzy?
You're more precious than a bright pink pearl.

I would stay awake past the midnight hour,
Just to see those sweet lines of text,
Treasured like a single blooming flower,
Before you know it, I'm staying on for the next.

Cautiously tasted the thrice forbidden fruit of love,
The black clouds gathered to prevent so,
But you fit on like a perfect winter glove,
And I chose that path a long time ago.

I need God's emergency hotline right now darling,
Mum quick, I told you angels existed here,
That it wasn't merely a dizzy fairy tale ending,
How can I survive without you all these years?

Those smiling electronic emoticons you show,
Your comforting virtual words lift my soul,
Lyxxxx, *hugs*, *kisses*, XOXO,
They make me smile, my sorrow grows.

But what is romance without the pain?
The long distance and hours in between us,
They join not seperate our fragile chains,
So quiet now my love, hush hush.

All I ever want now is you to be mine,
To curl with you and feel your heart beat,
Give you a kiss and keep our fingers intwined,
But it'll be five long years before we meet.

Lay down and watch the full moon shine,
Think of your mail, cry a single tear,
Without you I really don't feel fine,
Our contact through a screen wide and clear.

Switching of the blessed computer is like,
Cutting off my sole beloved oxygen supply,
The late night hours cause my heart beat spike,
Yet it's daytime over there, our contrasting skies.

We're so close together, yet so distant,
Now that hurts like the thorns of a rose,
Wish these long years pass in an instant,
It makes a good tragic Victorian prose.

So this Valentines Day is bane and boon,
Have someone to love, yet can't touch,
What's a fairy tale without the sad tunes?
Only one thing left to say to you,
I love you.

The judging would be now, as today is the deadline, might as well get on with it.

Honestly, I could not stop laughing while reading this poem. I mean, the mathematical stuff all makes sense(depending on your viewpoint). It's the "this is what you get when you date a mathematician's daughter" thing that cracks me up. Very humorous. I think that you would have to have been very creative with the rhymes whilst using such unwieldy words. I mean...it would be very difficult for you to find rhymes for words like that. Therefore, not only for skill but for making me laugh, you get the merit. Very good. And original, too.

P.S.- So...the third side, the inequal one in your isosceles, I presume that would be the in-laws, yes? xP

This is a very close second, and I think that the depth in this classical, cliche one, beats out its victor. But at times, the rhyme is stretched, for example "ending" and "darling". But still a very good poem. I liked how it spoke of a long-distance relationship, together through electronics, yet separate physically.

I think that this is a good poem. Even though it probably didn't take much effort(I never did get all the hype over haikus) it's fairly standout in its cynical perspective, as well as being the only haiku entered. So, great. =D

New Theme: Time
New Deadline: February 22
Time, time, time. The passage of it, the effect of it, Old Man Time, anything you can think of. Seriously. If you're not sure, run it by me.
Congratulations to everybody.

So I suppose this is nostalgia month for poetry themes? Those were good times. An excellent job to Nichodemus too, a unique rendering of a not-so common subject. Thanks to Moab too for a good judging.

And the unequal side of the isoceles? Probably the kid sister who always tags along.

You can't control it
You can forget it
But it still reminds you that it's there

Tick Tock Tick Tock...

It speeds up when you're having fun
And crawls when you are bored
It's mocking you, laughing at you

Tick Tock Tick Tock...

You could be counting down to the new year
Or laying still, because you can't sleep
Time's whisper will surround you, immobilize you

Tick Tock Tick Tock...

Look in your photo album
And see how powerful time really is
It conceals eternity's memories and answers
Some never to be revealed

Tick Tock Tick Tock...

Wait. What am I doing?
I'm just staring out into space
Listening to time tick by

Tick Tock Tick Tock...

Time will not stop me
from living the best life I can
But the question is,
Will it stop you?

Tick Tock Tick Tock...
Stop.

Yeah Parsat...this must be nostaligia 'time.'

I remember back when it was 'Love' last time I wrote my 'Why' poem and everyone was like 'OMG YOU WROTE SERIOUSNESS' because before that each poem had been paying out Strop for being a bogan.

Good times, goooood times...
