First, I will post the overall rules, and then I will post the specifics about this week.

Original rules, as stated by Ubertuna:

It must fit the week's theme.
It must be submitted by the deadline.
It cannot have inappropriate language in it.
It cannot be stolen (if you plagiarize, we will find you).

Also:

The poem must be created for this contest
A user cannot win two weeks in a row (though everyone is welcome to submit every week!)
Only one submission per user will be accepted

As we all know, the winner will recieve a merit, and their poem will be featured on the _Poetry_ page.

OK, on to this week's topic...Again, we are having a style instead of a theme. Also, this week we are having TWO WEEKS to do it, instead of the usual one. Why? Because this will be an EPIC poem. Or, rather, a parody of an epic poem. Generally, epic poetry is very long, and tells the serious story of a heroic figure. Well, this week, the epic figure is YOU! Write a long poem (I'll leave the definition of 'long' up to you, but give it a good go) about the heroic story of you! It can be silly, serious, whatever... just have fun with it. You have two weeks, so have a great time!

Pragmatic wounds inlay
a wooden pot of abstraction.
Consuming every last shard
of the world.

But if for only so an hour,
an angelic, beautiful flower
emerges from the soft silky dew,

They lull back to rest;
Unity shines forthwith
foreboding chimes,
of an unbroken crime.

Yeah. Eat those thoughts.

The ongoing conflict;
The harsh battle within;
The need to self-restrict;
Feelings are trapped beneath the skin.

Although filled with apprehension,
I now realize what I must do,
I reveal my true intentions:
I proclaim the daunting phrase, "I love you."

To express my true self in such a way,
Was the greatest decision of my life.
Perhaps my timing was good on that day:
Now I will always be proud to call her my wife.

I was standing
waiting
for the right time
to come
waiting
anxious
feeling dramatic
I couldn't wait
any longer
all about
timing.
If it didn't come
I would scream
WHERE IS THE BUS!

Forgive me for this, but I have little time. I will only post the names and a very brief reason as to why they have placed how they have.

3rd Place: dudeguy45

The poem is awkward, there is no doubt. But in itself it is somehow heartbreaklingly charming. The awkward thoughts of man still in love with a memory.

2rd Place: Maverick4

A truly heartfelt poem, that encompases time as a whole, and something beyond measure. Truth be told, the poem sounds almost lyrical when I read it. Well done.

1st Place and Merit: Graham

A poem that is in its very simplicity, profound. I'll assume the comment at the end is not part of the poem, for that would truly ruin the effect that you have wrought.

Well that's over. But, I have one last announcement. I will no longer be judging these contests. As you have noticed the judging has been getting steadily delayed these past weeks. For that I apologize. I am hoping Parsat, who has returned, will resume judging. I am simply too busy among other things. Truly it was a pleasure reading the work submitted, and at times a headache, but enjoyable nonetheless.

The final theme I have the privledge of giving you is this:

Redemption of Past Sorrows

Due Date: August 28, 2011

Hello, the name's Parsat, for those of you who don't recognize me. I'm a firm traditional poet (rhyme and meter) by my own style, but I enjoy all kinds of poetry. You can see my DeviantART for some of my work. I've judged this contest on and off through the years and seen many a good poet make their debut here. I do like wolf's choice of themes...we will see how this goes!

Parsat! Your back! Wewt! It's sad to see Wolf leave after being the judge for a while, but having Parsat is awesome. I'll get to work soon on a poem.
And if it's not too personal, could I ask why you're leaving, Wolf?

Catch

My work day was done
And I only felt like lying on the couch
Perhaps watching the football game too
My son had other plans

"Do you want to play catch?"
He said with an eager face and eyes
How could I refuse
But I did

"I am too tired,"
I called out
"Maybe tomorrow."
That was a lie

The next day I returned home
"Do you want to play catch?"
I had a business call
And I could not put it off

"Sorry son,"
I said
"But I have work to do."
Tomorrow I would surely play catch

The years went by
My son forgot about his glove
It grew dusty and reeked of mildew
I still had not played catch with my son

He started driving today
He took his car out for a spin
It was on the news later tonight
The boy was in the ICU

Tears welled up in our eyes
As the doctor told us the news
Our son will never walk again
His spine was shattered

He got home from the hospital
Not remembering his own bedroom
My wife and I cried
Seeing his lost face

He wheeled out into the garage
And knocked a few things over
Something caught his eye
It was his glove

"Do you want to play catch?"
He said with eager face and eyes
How could I refuse
"Let's play."

If I am the only contestant, do I still win a merit?

zakyman: No. We extend the date until other people submit. If no more than 3 people submit, then we just move on to the next round.

Yeah, I know, it might be disappointing, but the reason we have a contest is so that people can get better through competition and inspire one another. Idealistic as it may seem, the contest didn't pop up just so people could get merits.
