I wrote this up today in thoughts. I use studies and facts, hope you find it interesting, and I thought this would be the best forum since it did pertain to the topic.
Part 1. Main attraction
When people first started seeing video games new releases they thought it would be the end of theatre, and other forms of entertainment. But are disproved by results, the basis's of entertainment lay in seperate area's of attraction. For example, while video games may have inter-activity, the movies provoke more emotions, thoughts and full fledged stories, arguably the basic amenity of art. But of course don't get me wrong the video game industry didn't start on a base of hollow thoughts, it delved quickly into digital Utopia's or quick thinking killers. The general words for these attractions were conducted by research and I'll list them simply.
A. The first attraction, as stated in digital Utopia's(1), is fantasy. Many people dream of doing things in their life and when they feel or know they cannot be accomplished they realize that a video game can project their dreams and achieve them. So as known, specific games appeal to different players, since fantasy was a sparked genre by mythology, tall tales, and legends it grazes the mind of any child today, and occasionally adults.
Now to say that people are attracted to these games by pure fantasy would be a farce, there are common elements in all attractions and genre's of video games. These would be listed farther down the page(2). The story of the game has a lot to do with these gamers, plots rich and graphic pictography of the unfolding stories help very much. It's the inter-active portion though that makes fantasy such an overwhelmingly celebrated and successful topic, is the use of several things used in self actualization(3), a top if you will of a hierarchy of human need and motivation, motivating the player to continue, creating an addiction. It uses items as goals as a set of digital tangible rewards that creates a satisfaction in the player's conscience, thus making him want to start a new goal and continue a journey to a completion, which if elaborated, may not be a single goal or thing(4).
B. This is a simple attraction that can be shared with the likes of roller coasters, and base jumping. Adrenaline is created in fast action and threats, and of course goals. As taking part of the kill, race, or other quick reactive goals. Plots can be escaping but these aren't common in many of these games in this Attraction basis. For example, Shellshock in Half Life Twoeathmatch, it's a very basic adrenaline rush, by using fast speeds, weapon's as goals, and fast reaction times, it completes the basis of what creates adrenaline.
Part 2 (1)Utopia is a common word after Sir Saint Thomas More, Victor Michels, Theobald Ziegler, wrote their book in 1895 about the fantasy dream world that would be the best life to live in a world, Utopia's thoughts are now commonly shunned because to create a perfect place many basic human needs would be given up creating a bland and generally thought unhappy lifestyle. Now Utopia stands as the basic word though for "erfect place"
(2)The four basic video game needs: Sounds- Most people would know that people are classified as Auditory, Kinesthetic, or Visual learners, and everyone must have some part of each, so without all three in a video game the story looses interest fast. Auditory learners however must have sounds to keep the images vivid or exciting
Visuals- Visuals or graphics as referred to in writing a report are important, obviously, without them in the first place there is no video game, but the better they are the more enticing the game may be, for example, a game can be a peice of dung, but can still be very enticing to watch it unfold.
Interactivity- This is the main interest in video games, it can be referred to as controls, game play, or handling. Of course without interactivity it would be a movie, song, or digital tale. The interactive need is a strong one in many games so when Wii imagined the system using movement as a key ingredient of interactivity, it resulted in being the #1 sold console in many nations including the US.
Plot- This would be the movie theme but the plot does matter, without it what would graphics be but just a pretty picture, plot would be where fantasy lies and how goals help entertain. A simple enough need for games.
(3) Here I refer to the Psychologist, Dr Maslow's theory of human needs and motivation. As depicted below, the basic living needs come as a base, but the higher up the pyramid the happier your life is to be, and more productive. His book, as published in 1970 is now thought as of a basic knowledge in managing and supervising, and required in many classes.
His hierarchy or pyramid: Or go here if the image doesn't come out. http://ambrand.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/06/400px-maslows_hierarchy_of_needssvg.png
(4)World of Warcraft is the basic example of this theorem, the game play lacks very much but rich images and cohersive goals encourage players to keep paying $15 a month to make them the most well known online MMORPG. The goals are endless and that's the ploy of such a game. I highly recommend staying away from this category for it may be the most costly!
Accomplishing these goals is a video game designers best wish to creating a successful game and artwork, so keeping this in mind may help you with future produce in such an area, and helps analyze how decent the game actually is.

interesting. I dont think anything said is wrong or that i would disagree. It tells the truth, and i never thought about learning types being put into video games. Im a balanced learner so all three aspects have to be there . good job btw.
Yeah, a lot of people on this site are under the age of 18 and just blindly see it to be fun, but I use these thoughts studies and concepts commonly with game makers and mod makers. It's great for reviewing too, and I bet it'll get you a merit if you type it right.
It's good to know what makes a good game and why you do or don't like a game.
But as I say again, this site isn't exactly a website that is going to look into.
And no, it took about 15 minutes, I've learned the affects of video games from studies done by Iowa state's studies and an institute known as the American Psychologial Society*Though most studies were done in 2005 and still may be comparibly outdated*.
Also I generally thought of what I feel when playing these games and compare them, it's a heavy psychological thought process and really can't be confirmed without brain analasys. Nothing I dare to do soon, but the theory as known I think is true.
I highly reccomend finding something random and unknown to do a report on at least once a week. It teaches me a lot.
Again I hope you liked my report. Have a nice day.
So would I be able to make my life happier by changing myself to fit Dr. Maslow's pyramid? Even if you don't know what a gamer likes by words, you still do recognize it. You dont have to do a check up on your game to make sure that its got all the elements.
Would the information make someone make any better of a game?
But wait.. Back then people were still happy with what there was those classic games we think are so crappy they loved it. Id say its all about having something new.
It's all trial and error, thats how each era starts, and how people decided what they like in video games.
I have a feeling thought that video games are going to evolve into Virtual Reality then a new era will arise but when we're still in shooters and PC games, I doubt it until that day comes. We'll still be in the same likings.
I don't know if I agree with all that. But I do relate video games to sort of what reading does. It helps take your mind away from your body, and what is happening in your life, and takes you somewhere else. For some people, this relaxing place, is a shoot em up game where they can take out frustration. For others, it might be something like Viva Pinata where you can work on something and make it grow.
I think it is all just about taking yourself out of the body for a while. Forgetting about what is going on around you.
It's all trial and error, thats how each era starts, and how people decided what they like in video games.
The point is, people were satisfied with what they had, be it their "crappy" consoles. There was nothing of which you can call an error.
It was all trial. We all can see whats "better". The publishers didn't find a mistake and fixed it...this process should have an end, a quick one too. If you fix an error, its fixed, heh.
So what happened was that technology improved and people could create "better" games as it went along. The consumers, always up for something new, went and grabbed it. Got bored of it, then bought something newer again.
Hmm - know i think about it I dont agree with the order the hierarchy is in due to the fact that other things make me happier(or what motivates me) than those that are at the top. Therefore ive come the the conclusion that computer games cannot be created to work on some of the points you said, eg. work on learning styles etc as it would not be suited for all people, and would need a wider approach to fufilling peoples needs, otherwise less people would be playing computer games.
I wrote this in about 30 seconds so dont blame me if it doesnt make sense or has no point lol - i hope it does ^.^ I simply jumped to my own theory, which i dont think i can explain properly in words.
Yes, because they improved the need in senses, better graphics, plots and more and of course there was error, these are the games you don't hear about though, such as ET, biggest fail of all time in video games, they neglect to mention them though they are errors it taught the developers something.
The point is, people were satisfied with what they had, be it their "crappy" consoles. There was nothing of which you can call an error.

That would refer to fantasy, doing things that you can't do, another version of you, for your mind is in the interactive qualities of the game, it's just a more technical breakdown of the same thing.
For some people, this relaxing place, is a shoot em up game where they can take out frustration.
Rarely, for then these games would be suffering, frustration isn't that big of an influence on these players.
For others, it might be something like Viva Pinata where you can work on something and make it grow. I think it is all just about taking yourself out of the body for a while. Forgetting about what is going on around you.
And with that I would be referring to a mix of Fantasy and Goals, just a more technical breakdown of the same thing. Maybe oversimplified but you can go into each genre and find they have something to do with either fantasy or adrenaline.
