(I am conservative, but i am going to attempt not to be biased, and just say what i saw...honestly).

Democratic Convention:

The speeches from people like the Senators, and Governors, and all those people who give speeches in build up to the acceptance speech, there speeches were OK. They were mainly just a long round of state the country's problems but not offer any solutions to the problems, just get the crowd riled up.

Hillary Clinton's speech: I want to comment on this one separately. Basically she was being a suck up to Obama, and just kissing his...never mind. Everyone could tel she was bitter about the speech, and she did not want to be up there, the way she presented it was awkward. Although, she did do a great job of stating what Obama was going to do and getting the crowd going. I think it was a pretty good job well done on her part.

Obama's Video and Speech: I thought it was very moving. When it started i was prepared to be a critic and scoff at him, but i said nothing. I just sat there and watched it, and i could feel sincerity from him, i may not agree with him, but the sincerity was there none the less. It was well put together, it did not just focus on one points, it covered everything. Along with a little life story. It was a great build up to the speech.

Obama did a good job on the speech, it was well said. He had some great lines, and i got the feeling he wrote it himself. He was very comfortable up at the podium, and very confident. he delivered it well and snagged the hearts of millions of people.

The pillars: Sorry, i just have to mention the greek pillars. You remember those? Yeahhhhhh...they were Styrofoam. Tacky?

Celebration: The confetti and fireworks were nice, but it had no balloon drop. The balloon drop is a long running tradition. Stupid?

Republican:

Lead up speeches to the acceptance speech:

Everyone was just rambling on about random hubalubub, and not really doing much of anything. It was kind of lame really.

Rudy Giuliani's and Palin's speech: They both did and excellent job. Rudy really got the Republicans going, and said everything that made them want to fly.

I thought he took every single Republican in this country and a lot of Independents and stuck them in his pocket. Palin, the same thing. She had great lines, delivered the speech well. And here is a shocking thing for politics: She stated problems, AND OFFERED SOLUTIONS :0.

Over all the both delivered brilliant speeches.

McCain's video and Speech: My favorite part was where he talked about his war experience...oh wait a sec...THAT'S ALL HE TALKED ABOUT. See that was the problem, he focused on one thing, and that one thing happened to be the one thing that the Democrats have prepared to beat him up about it. You know how they were complaining before that he was focusing to much on Vietnam, well he made a 7 minute video on it. I thought that was a mistake. As for his speech, it was good, it started out well. But then it went a little long. and i started to zone out. Which happens to be the reason i can not give much of a review on it.

The celebration: Very well done. Good choice of music, confetti, fire works, balloon drop.

Overall the democrats did excellent and really did what they needed to. they Republicans did well, but Rudy and Palin really made the convention amazing. They kind of saved the Republicans behinds.

So what do you guys think. Please only post thought out descrptive responses, this thread is not really designed for responses like :

"I totally agree".
"Cool".
"Thanks, this is really interesting".

I live in Minnesota and disliked having the RNC here; it brought a lot of nut-jobs to town; not just the extremely socially conservative, but the ultra-liberal protesters and anarchists. Anyways here are my thoughts on the speeches, mainly pointing out flaws.

Palin's-
I thought her speech was well delivered, but the actual content was puerile and pointless.

And among the many things I owe [my parents] is one simple lesson: that this is America, and every woman can walk through every door of opportunity."

An obvious appeal to Clintonites, apparently failing though. Polls say Biden made people 12% more likely to vote Obama and Palin made people 6% more likely to vote McCain. Although polls are famously inaccurate for a month after the conventions. At one point Mondale was leading Reagan by 6% (the only state Mondale won was Minnesota).

"I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a "community organizer," except that you have actual responsibilities." -Palin attacking Obama

A community organizer I would say has much more principles than a mayor, they show up to help out of choice, if they ever wanted to they could just stop without notice.

"That luxury jet was over the top. I put it on eBay."

Not that it actually sold... And Alaska is probably one of the states where it would actually be useful seeing as it is the largest state.

"I told the Congress "thanks, but no thanks," for that Bridge to Nowhere."

She campaigned hard on this in Ketchikan. She told everyone there she would build it and got many votes from them. Now, she refuses to build it, does that leave her other promises sounding as credible? Also the people from Ketchikan absolutely hate her now.

"I fought to bring about the largest private-sector infrastructure project in North American history.

And when that deal was struck, we began a nearly forty billion dollar natural gas pipeline to help lead America to energy independence."

Because government-funded pipelines are truly a part of a private free market...

"What does he actually seek to accomplish, after he's done turning back the waters and healing the planet? The answer is to make government bigger ... take more of your money ... give you more orders from Washington ... and to reduce the strength of America in a dangerous world. America needs more energy ... our opponent is against producing it." - Attacking Obama

The last Democrat in the white house decreased the size of the government and the current Republican brought it to record sizes.

"Taxes are too high ... he wants to raise them. His tax increases are the fine print in his economic plan, and let me be specific." -Attacking Obama

Taxes are bad, but the last two Republicans raised them, when they promised to lower them.

"[Harry Reid] said, quote, "I can't stand John McCain." Ladies and gentlemen, perhaps no accolade we hear this week is better proof that we've chosen the right man. Clearly what the Majority Leader was driving at is that he can't stand up to John McCain."

That's a fallacy, it changes the meaning of the words.

Biden's-
Not the greatest speech, but I have less to critique.

"John McCain proposes $200 billion in new tax breaks for corporate America, $1 billion alone for just eight of the largest companies, but no relief for 100 million American families, that's not change; that's more of the same.

Even today, as oil companies post the biggest profits in history--a half trillion dollars in the last five years--he wants to give them another $4 billion in tax breaks. But he voted time and again against incentives for renewable energy: solar, wind, biofuels. That's not change; that's more of the same."

Generally decreasing taxes on things, like oil, decreases its price, unless there truly is a monopoly, which there isn't, there are many competing oil companies. Also, much of the oil profits are used for further exploration and are thus higher than the true profits of the companies. Furthermore, biofuels are horrible, and nuclear is the most efficient power source, not that we should even give incentives, otherwise big businesses will send lobbyists to get the incentives too.

"He voted 19 times against raising the minimum wage. For people who are struggling just to get to the next day, that's not change; that's more of the same."

Minimum wage laws cuts jobs and raises prices; I would rather see more people employed who might get paid less but can afford more because things are cheaper.

"Barack Obama will transform our economy by making alternative energy a genuine national priority, creating 5 million new jobs and finally freeing us from the grip of foreign oil. That's the change we need."

Raising taxes to pay for the energy incentives costs jobs and it will also cut the jobs of oil workers. A gradual free market change would be better.

"Barack Obama knows that any country that out teaches us today will out-compete us tomorrow. He'll invest in the next generation of teachers. He'll make college more affordable. That's the change we need."

Free market education is better and cheaper.

"Barack Obama will bring down health care costs by $2,500 for the typical family, and, at long last, deliver affordable, accessible health care for all Americans. That's the change we need."

By raising taxes $3,000 dollars a family.

"In recent days, we've once again seen the consequences of this neglect with Russia's challenge to the free and democratic country of Georgia. Barack Obama and I will end this neglect. We will hold Russia accountable for its actions, and we'll help the people of Georgia rebuild."

I don't think it is a good idea to anger Russia.

McCain's-

He bored me to the point where I quit watching. Blabbering on about your war career doesn't win votes.

Obama's-
Well delivered, offered solutions, the pillars were stupid, and I do have critiques of some things he said like energy independence and how the government should interfere with business for the workers benefits (the workers can just unionize), but I don't feel like going through and picking it apart right now.
