I am thoroughly enjoying spore. I've played through the Cell, Creature, Tribal, and Civilization stages multiple times, just to try out the three main playstyles. I'm still working my way through the Space stage, as it is the "meat" of the game.
I know there are a lot of people out there that felt the game was a bit of a letdown, but that is bound to happen when so much hype has been spun for so long. I think a major part of it is people that saw the famous 2005 demo videos and such, and thought to themselves "That looks awesome, I'm totally going to look forward to that game." and then didn't pay any more attention to it. The game has been obviously dumbed down, and cartoonified. It was to be expected, because some of the stuff they (Maxis, Will Wright) were showing off simply aren't possible on the computers that most people use these days.
However, all in all, I think it's a blast. It's got a good balance of the sandboxy, freestyle, do whatever you feel like gameplay that many Spore fans have been waiting for, but it also does a decent job of pointing you in the "right direction" as it were. One thing you might notice is that the difficulty is a bit "off". All of the stages other than Space are really, really easy, whereas Space can be mind-numbingly difficult, and in some cases downright impossible. I've slammed the escape key and walked away from my computer is disgust a number of times, only to come back later and approach the problem from a different angle and still fail miserably. You manage to wrap your brain around it eventually, though, and when you do, it's a blast.
I've played it at a friend's house, and I was a bit dissapointed about it. It was hardly fun, and it was more like 'The Sims' than anything else. It crashed on me about twice before I decided to just not play it anymore. My friend was at the Tribal stage, and he thought the game was very easy, but I thought it was too boring.
I would, however, change my opinion on this game if I started at the begining of the game, and not halfway through.

That's what I would suggest.
And your friend is right, the game is really easy. Try tossing it on the Hard difficulty. It actually makes the earlier stages of the game a challenge, and more fun. Like I said in my earlier post, though, the Space stage is really the meat of the game. The earlier stages are really just a way for the software to determine what type of creature you're playing, and ultimately how it reacts on an interstellar playing field.

I've seen the Space stage on YouTube, and it's quite cool looking, very difficult, but cool. I like it. I'm probally going to buy this game to see if it's good or not.
OK, wait, I just want something cleared up: I only have a 1.9GHz dual core processor. The game needs 2.0GHz, but the specs were for Pentium 4, but I heard that the GHz values increase for Core processors. Is this true? Do I still have a chance to buy this game?
