Where I live, the age where you can get a drivers license is already 18. I think it's good to have it there, I've met extremely few 16 year olds I'd entrust with a car... It's just two more years, it's not a whole lot, and a car is really something you need responsibility to have.

In urban settings, raising the driving age makes sense. Teenagers are more reckless and therefore more likely to get into accidents. By raising the driving age there are going to be less deaths/injurys that are related to automobile accidents.

That being said, in rural areas like where I live, teenagers driving is a necessity. As teenagers get older they are involved in more things and it is logisticaly impossible for parents to drive them to where ever they need to be. And because they live in rural areas, the only way to get to these places is by car. Teenagers have to be able to drive.

Well, at least in L. A., 2/3 of deaths for teenagers are car-related. I think the driving age here should be at least 21. And if the Liberal politicians want everyone to take the bus, then they should ubgrade the Metro Transit Authority system(which is run by the government). I'd pay $1,000 to anyine who finds an MTA bus without gang signs etched into the windows...

There is pros and cons to this.

Pros:

-Not as many accidents
-Teenagers still have to obey parents rules...

Cons:

-Teenagers get mad, want license sooner.
-Uh.....

=D Sorry, I just sorta threw that together.

We should raise the driving age. Letting teens drive later could have a lot more benefits, including human lifes. Its not like you'll never get to drive. I'd rather wait to drive and drive for a long time instead of getting my license early and possibly get into an accident.

Ahhh, I think I might feel safer with less teens on the road haha.

Teenagers are more reckless and therefore more likely to get into accidents.

So urban teens are more likely to kill and maim then rural teens? Is there a statistic somewhere confirming that?

I never said that. Teens are reckless every where. What I am saying is that urban teenager have more ways to get around than those in rural areas. Also, there is a difference between driving in a large city like LA, and a small town with only one stoplight.

I'm of the opinion that the only way to become a better driver is through practice. Assuming that's true the only argument for safety then is that teens are reckless and can't make good choices, but if you're going to say that the only real effective solution would be to raise the age to at least 25 or so which is simply unacceptable in a county as spread out as the US where driving isn't just a privilege but a necessity in most cases.

There could be something said about raising it to 18, but I personally prefer that you have you're parents around to teach you rather then trying to learn it on your own or other more expensive solutions (ie requiring tutoring and courses like in Germany and other countries).

I say you should be able to learn it at 15 to 16 and then when you are 18 then you are able to drive

And yes rising the age of being able to drive would help but it wont eliminate it completely.

Rising the driving age would look good on paper, but in practice there are too many downsides.

I agree. If the driving age is raised, statistics will soon show that the youngest (most inexperienced) ones are still those with the highest accident rate.
