What is the U.S.A. Going To Do About Its Dependence On Foreign Oil? In my opinion, the U.S. is way to dependent on foreign oil. Personally, I think we should drill in Alaska to help out with this problem.
Any solution for our dependence of foreign fossil fuels has to center around reducing our use of those fossil fuels. We don't have the reserves in the US to supply our own oil so my suggestions usually revolve around shifting power production from coal and natural gas to nuclear and wind, and switching our gas fired cars to LNG powers transportation (of which we have large quantities). Once we've done this we can work to expand our power infrastructure to handle greater capacities and in turn slowly switch LNG powered transportation (at least for most average motorists) to plug in electric. There are of course challenges to be met, but I think it's pretty safe to assume that LNG can buy us enough time to develop the better batter technology that will allow us to use electric cars.
Looking towards the future, research has to be made on alternative energy sources. For now, we have to use our own oil sources. We have an abundant source in Alaska as well as off the coast of Florida. For those who say that it is bad for the environment, consider this: the Cubans are already drilling off the coast of Florida. If there is drilling going on already, shouldn't we be getting some of the benefit?
Also, we need to build more refinaries here in the United States.
Oil companies have 79,000 acres in the states, we have plenty of oppurtunities.
Off shore drilling is NOT the answer, we relieve our dependence by 1% by 20 to 30 YEARS .
We have a lot of investment in natural resources too, but our main issue is the regulations, we can cut 40% of usage just by setting a investment in biofuel which will repay the entire cost of government intervention in 1 and a quarter years and create more jobs than all dericks you've ever known.
Pfft, who needs cars? Just look at Japan! Do THEY use cars? Very few, the rest use bikes to get to places. A small reason why Americans are lazy! Most Americans use cars! They are dependent on them!

Japan is also a much smaller and more urbanized, they have something like 1/3 of the US population in about 4% of the land. It's really hard to travel by foot or bike over long distances quickly carrying any amount of stuff with you which makes it nearly impossible to do in the US.
Sadly, I see us guzzling oil for at least another decade. Maybe people will get smart when it's 10 dollars a gallon, like in Europe. Hopefully though, we'll grow our own, use some solar, maybe even air (those air cars seem really good).
